Adobe Illustrator comes with many different libraries of art brushes, including pencil, ink, and chalk. Additionally, you can find loads of fantastic art brushes on Creative Market (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/crtv.mk\/abvb\">the Brush Studio<\/a>),&Acirc;&nbsp;which you can install in Illustrator. Today, I&#8217;m going to take you into my brush creation process, so you can learn how to create your own unique art brushes from scratch.\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Youll_Need\"><\/span>What You&#8217;ll Need:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><ul>\n\t<li>Adobe Photoshop (any version)<\/li>\n\t<li>Adobe Illustrator (any version with the live trace feature)<\/li>\n\t<li>Your choice of media (e.g. pencil, charcoal, ink, crayons, etc)<\/li>\n\t<li>A piece of blank white paper or card stock<\/li>\n\t<li>A scanner or camera<\/li>\n<\/ul><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Decorate_Your_Blank_White_Paper_With_Straight_Lines\"><\/span>1. Decorate Your Blank White Paper With Straight Lines<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nDraw them as neatly and straight as you can.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16707 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28060016\/Media-Examples-560x471-1.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Media-Examples\" width=\"560\" height=\"471\">\nI&#8217;m going to be experimenting with several different types of media,&Acirc;&nbsp;including sharpie, ink pens, lead pencil,&Acirc;&nbsp;colored pencils,&Acirc;&nbsp;oil pastel, and&Acirc;&nbsp;charcoal.\nSince future projects may call for art brushes of all different lengths and widths, I&#8217;ve tried to vary the length and&Acirc;&nbsp;heaviness of my hand-drawn lines by using different techniques. For example, lightly pressing with the corner of my fresh charcoal produces a thin, precise line. If I use more pressure, I&#8217;ll get a thicker, bolder line. The possibilities here are endless.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Digitize_Your_Artwork_Using_Your_Camera_or_Scanner\"><\/span>2. Digitize Your Artwork, Using Your Camera or Scanner<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nIn order to get the highest possible quality, I&#8217;m going to be using my scanner and scan in my artwork between&Acirc;&nbsp;400-600dpi in a lossless file format (e.g. PNG, PDF, etc.).\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16708\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28060023\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-06-at-3.06.59-PM-560x329-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-06 at 3.06.59 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"329\">\nIf you&#8217;re using a camera, I recommend using a tripod and setting your camera aperture very small. To make sure everything is in focus, your camera should be exactly 90 degrees perpendicular to the artwork. Once you&#8217;ve finished capturing the handmade artwork, you&#8217;re ready to bring it into Photoshop.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16616\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061513\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-06-at-3.09.52-PM-560x350-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-06 at 3.09.52 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"350\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Reset_the_White_Point\"><\/span>3. Reset the White Point<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nAfter bringing my digital file into Photoshop, the first thing I notice is that I need to reset the white point of my background. To do this, create a new <strong>Levels Adjustment Layer<\/strong> in the layers panel. Choosing the white point option, click on the darkest area you would like to be white.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16709\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061519\/BeforeAfterLevels-560x297-1.png.webp\" alt=\"BeforeAfterLevels\" width=\"560\" height=\"297\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Increase_the_Contrast\"><\/span>4. Increase the Contrast<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nI&#8217;m also going to adjust contrast so I get the clearest, sharpest image possible. Create a <strong>Brightness\/Contrast Adjustment Layer<\/strong> and adjust the contrast until you are satisfied. For this tutorial, I&#8217;m going to be focusing on the thick charcoal line at the very top. Keep in mind that different media types will require unique settings during post-processing.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16710\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061526\/BeforeAfterBrightness-560x297-1.png.webp\" alt=\"BeforeAfterBrightness\" width=\"560\" height=\"297\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Clean_Up\"><\/span>5. Clean Up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nIf necessary, use the eraser tool to eliminate dust, stray artwork, etc. You want the end result to be as pristine as possible.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Resample_and_Save\"><\/span>6. Resample and Save<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nWhen you are satisfied with your artwork, resample the artwork to 72 dpi and save it as a PSD. After saving the file, flatten the image and use the rectangular marquee tool to select artwork, one media at a time.\nDifferent media will be handled differently in Illustrator. I&#8217;ll start by selecting my charcoal, copying the artwork, and pasting it into a new document in Illustrator.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16713\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061531\/BeforeLiveTrace-560x309-1.png.webp\" alt=\"BeforeLiveTrace\" width=\"560\" height=\"309\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Live_Trace\"><\/span>7. Live Trace<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nOnce I&#8217;ve pasted the artwork into Illustrator, I&#8217;m going to select the artwork and click&Acirc;&nbsp;the Live Trace feature near the top of the screen (circled in red below.) When the image has been traced, visit the settings on the top menu bar.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16714\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061535\/LiveTraceBar-560x32-1.png.webp\" alt=\"LiveTraceBar\" width=\"560\" height=\"32\">\nIn CS6, there&#8217;s actually a Live Trace panel that you can use to adjust trace settings. With <strong>Preview<\/strong> checked, I&#8217;ll adjust settings until Live Trace&Acirc;&nbsp;has satisfactorily rendered the artwork.&Acirc;&nbsp;Since my charcoal is basically one color, I&#8217;m going to use the black and white mode&Acirc;&nbsp;and check <strong>Ignore White<\/strong>.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16715\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061540\/LiveTracedCharcoal-560x275-1.png.webp\" alt=\"LiveTracedCharcoal\" width=\"560\" height=\"275\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Expand\"><\/span>8. Expand<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nAfter I&#8217;m satisfied with the results of the live trace, I&#8217;ll click Trace&Acirc;&nbsp;and go up to <strong>Expand<\/strong> on the tracing menu.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16716\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061546\/Expand-560x32-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Expand\" width=\"560\" height=\"32\">\nNow my image has been converted to vector paths!\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16717\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061552\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-13-at-3.02.51-PM-560x142-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.02.51 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"142\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Delete_Stray_Paths\"><\/span>9. Delete Stray Paths<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nNow I&#8217;m going to delete all the stray paths with a transparent fill. With my fill and stroke both set to blank, go to <strong>Select &gt; Same &gt; Fill &amp; Stroke<\/strong>, then delete all the selected paths.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16718\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061555\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-13-at-3.04.24-PM.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.04.24 PM\" width=\"73\" height=\"88\">\nI&#8217;m now left with only the black-filled artwork. Delete all other&Acirc;&nbsp;unnecessary stray paths, then select all (<strong>Command+A<\/strong>) and create a compound path (<strong>Command+8<\/strong>). Now you&#8217;ve got a clean source path with which to make art brushes.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Straighten_Your_Lines\"><\/span>10. Straighten Your Lines<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nYou&#8217;ve probably noticed how some of your hand-drawn lines aren&#8217;t completely straight. I&#8217;ve created a guideline to see how straight the line is, and I&#8217;ve noticed it needs to be straightened out and rotated a bit.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16720\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061559\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-13-at-3.08.07-PM-560x82-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.08.07 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"82\">\nWith the guide in place, I&#8217;ll select the artwork and rotate it with the Rotate tool.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16721\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061605\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-13-at-3.09.00-PM-560x79-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.09.00 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"79\">\nNext, I&#8217;ll&Acirc;&nbsp;go to <strong>Object &gt; Envelope Distort &gt; Make with Mesh<\/strong>. By creating a simple envelope, I can adjust the line so it is straight.&Acirc;&nbsp;My mesh settings:\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16722 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061610\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-13-at-3.10.59-PM-560x195-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.10.59 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"195\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16723 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061615\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-13-at-3.12.19-PM-560x62-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 3.12.19 PM\" width=\"560\" height=\"62\">\nAfter making a few minor adjustments, the brush looks a little straighter. After you&#8217;re done adjusting,&Acirc;&nbsp;go to <strong>Object &gt; Expand<\/strong>. With <strong>Object<\/strong> checked, click <strong>OK<\/strong>.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Fix_Overlapping_Issues\"><\/span>11. Fix Overlapping Issues<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nWith your brush selected, visit the Attributes panel and click the attribute&Acirc;&nbsp;called <strong>Use Non-Zero Winding Fill Rule<\/strong>.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16725\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061620\/Non-ZeroAttribute-560x203-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Non-ZeroAttribute\" width=\"560\" height=\"203\">\nThis little attribute will prevent your paths from this crazy overlapping &#8220;effect&#8221; when you try to use your brush:\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16726\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061629\/Rules.png.webp\" alt=\"Rules\" width=\"556\" height=\"437\">\nCongratulations! You&#8217;re ready for the final step: creating the brush.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_Create_the_Brush\"><\/span>12. Create the Brush<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nNow, my brush is pretty big, so I&#8217;m going to make it about 1\/3 the original size. With the artwork selected, visit your brushes panel and create a new brush.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-16727\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/09\/28061633\/NewBrush1-560x257-1.png.webp\" alt=\"NewBrush1\" width=\"560\" height=\"257\">\nChoose <strong>Art Brush<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong>. You&#8217;ve just created your very own art brush completely from scratch.
