I&#8217;m always\u00c2&nbsp;inspired by holiday photo greetings, especially the ones that feature\u00c2&nbsp;elegant, hand-lettered scripts sprawling gracefully across the card, finished with a list of family members in a clean, complimentary typeface.<br \/>\nHand-lettered typography continues to increase in popularity, giving today&#8217;s greeting cards a sophisticated yet\u00c2&nbsp;homey and comfortable flair.\u00c2&nbsp;I invite you to join me in\u00c2&nbsp;making\u00c2&nbsp;a\u00c2&nbsp;holiday greeting card using your own\u00c2&nbsp;hand lettering. These\u00c2&nbsp;techniques can help you\u00c2&nbsp;make this year&#8217;s photo greeting simple and beautiful, but the techniques I&#8217;ll be demonstrating today can be applied to any design, even\u00c2&nbsp;if you&#8217;re reading this in July. I&#8217;ll be creating an effect like this:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19384\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044532\/Photo1.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Photo\" width=\"680\" height=\"952\"><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_will_need\"><\/span>You will need:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Photoshop (Any version that supports smart objects. I&#8217;m in\u00c2&nbsp;CS6.)<\/li>\n<li>A scanner (here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.com\/B009KBLYDM\">good one<\/a>) or decent camera<\/li>\n<li>A lovely family photo to turn into a greeting<\/li>\n<li>Some hand-lettered artwork ready to scan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Create_Hand_Lettering\"><\/span>Step 1: Create Hand Lettering<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have some artwork ready, now is the time to start lettering. If you&#8217;re interesting in learning hand lettering, check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/crtv.mk\/ffKi\">post<\/a>\u00c2&nbsp;for more information. Here are a few more <a href=\"http:\/\/crtv.mk\/tmUY\">tips<\/a> to get you started. I&#8217;ve already finished a few different hand-lettered greetings, just done with a soft 2B\u00c2&nbsp;pencil because I&#8217;m going for a rough chalk-like effect.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19363\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044536\/Drawings.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Drawings\" width=\"800\" height=\"597\"><br \/>\nYou can use any media you want (ink, calligraphy ink, charcoal, chalk, crayons, etc.) Paper also makes a difference. The above sketches were done on some lightly textured drawing paper.<br \/>\nSketch, ink\u00c2&nbsp;in if desired, clean up, and erase unwanted marks, and you&#8217;ll be ready to scan your work.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Scan_Your_Work\"><\/span>Step 2: Scan Your Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In order to get the highest possible quality, I&#8217;m going to scan in my artwork around\u00c2&nbsp;600dpi in PNG format.\u00c2&nbsp;<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19364\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044540\/1-scan.jpg.webp\" alt=\"1-scan\" width=\"980\" height=\"644\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_3_Clean_Up_in_Photoshop\"><\/span>Step 3: Clean Up in Photoshop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The first thing I do when I bring my lettering in Photoshop is create several adjustment layers to make the background disappear. As I mentioned, my paper is lightly textured, and I want to eliminate all the texture and have a completely empty white background. With a pencil\/chalk sketch this is a bit more difficult, but I will start by creating a <strong>Levels<\/strong> adjustment layer.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19368\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044546\/3-cleanup.jpg.webp\" alt=\"3-cleanup\" width=\"1000\" height=\"571\"><br \/>\nIn the properties of the Levels adjustment layer, select the white point option (circled) and using the color picker, select the darkest area of gray that should represent white.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19369\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044551\/3-cleanup2.jpg.webp\" alt=\"3-cleanup2\" width=\"1115\" height=\"541\"><br \/>\nAfter I&#8217;ve defined my white point, I&#8217;ll create a <strong>Brightness\/Contrast<\/strong> adjustment layer. In the properties, I&#8217;ll adjust the settings until I&#8217;m satisfied with the degree of contrast and brightness.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19370\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044557\/3-cleanup3.jpg.webp\" alt=\"3-cleanup3\" width=\"1106\" height=\"716\"><br \/>\nFinally, I&#8217;ll double click on the actual lettering layer (the background layer) to convert it to an editable layer, then give it a layer mask. Selecting the mask and using the eraser tool, I&#8217;ll\u00c2&nbsp;erase dust, noise, scratches, and try to isolate the lettering from the background. This took me about five minutes.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19371\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29044604\/3-cleanup4.jpg.webp\" alt=\"3-cleanup4\" width=\"1680\" height=\"952\"><br \/>\n(If you&#8217;re using high-contrast inked lettering, there may not be a need to manually erase the background. Skip to the next step!)<br \/>\nWhen I&#8217;ve got my lettering roughly isolated in the mask, I&#8217;ll make a selection around the lettering, inverse the selection, and delete. Now the background is gone.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19372 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050016\/3-cleanupisolate.png.webp\" alt=\"3-cleanupisolate\" width=\"888\" height=\"393\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19373\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050029\/3-cleanupdelete.png.webp\" alt=\"3-cleanupdelete\" width=\"876\" height=\"390\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_4_Isolate_Lettering_and_Create_Transparency\"><\/span>Step 4: Isolate Lettering and Create Transparency<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This step describes how to make the lettering placeable over any background.\u00c2&nbsp;Save your lettering as a\u00c2&nbsp;.PSD (Photoshop) file. Duplicate the file (<strong>Image &gt; Duplicate<\/strong>) and change the mode to grayscale (<strong>Image &gt; Mode &gt; Grayscale<\/strong>. Merge layers and discard color information). You will now have a single layer.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19374\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050041\/4-grayscale.png.webp\" alt=\"4-grayscale\" width=\"1127\" height=\"371\"><br \/>\nIn the Channels panel (<strong>Window &gt; Channels<\/strong>) you&#8217;ll see\u00c2&nbsp;only the Gray channel. Holding down the <strong>CMD<\/strong> (Mac) or <strong>CTRL<\/strong> (PC) key, click the Gray channel. This will convert the channel to a selection.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19375\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050046\/4-Channels.jpg.webp\" alt=\"4-Channels\" width=\"1049\" height=\"367\"><br \/>\nInvert the selection with <strong>CMD\/CTRL + SHIFT + I<\/strong>. Last, create a Solid Color adjustment layer. The mask on this layer will automatically assume the selection, and you&#8217;ll be able to adjust the color of your lettering at any time, as well as place it over any background.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19376\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050059\/4-color.png.webp\" alt=\"4-color\" width=\"1083\" height=\"405\"><br \/>\nHide the background layer. Change the mode back to RGB (<strong>Image &gt; Mode &gt; RGB<\/strong> &#8211; do not merge or flatten layers) and save this as a new .PSD file.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19377\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050112\/4-color2.png.webp\" alt=\"4-color2\" width=\"1082\" height=\"399\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_5_Create_your_Greeting\"><\/span>Step 5: Create your Greeting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Create a new document in Photoshop, taking the size and desired outcome of the card into consideration. If you&#8217;re making a printed card, standard sizes include 4&#215;6, 5&#215;7, 8&#215;10, 8&#215;4, etc. I&#8217;m going to make mine a 5&#215;7 inch greeting card. Place the photo into the new document. Add filters as desired, considering the placement of the lettering. I&#8217;ve added a subtle vignette and a simple gradient, as well as some nifty filters from <a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/FilterGrade\">FilterGrade<\/a>. When you&#8217;re confident the photo can&#8217;t look any better, it&#8217;s time to place the lettering.<br \/>\nPlace the lettering over the photo (<strong>File &gt; Place<\/strong>, and locate your isolated\/transparent lettering.) Position it over the photo anywhere you want.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19380\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050115\/5-Photo.jpg.webp\" alt=\"5-Photo\" width=\"807\" height=\"730\"><br \/>\nSince the lettering is a smart object, it can be edited separately with a double-click in the layers panel. If I want to change the color of my lettering, I&#8217;ll double-click on the lettering smart object in the layers panel.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19382\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050119\/6-SmartObject.jpg.webp\" alt=\"6-SmartObject\" width=\"811\" height=\"435\"><br \/>\nThe smart object opens in a separate Photoshop window. I see my color adjustment layer once again. To edit the color, I&#8217;ll just double-click on the color icon and pick a new color.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19383\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2014\/12\/29050124\/6-color2.jpg.webp\" alt=\"6-color2\" width=\"1058\" height=\"355\"><br \/>\nWhen I&#8217;m done editing the smart object, I&#8217;ll just save (<strong>File &gt; Save<\/strong>) and close it. The smart object updates itself.<br \/>\nAll my greeting card needs now is a signature!
