In this tutorial, I&#8217;m going to focus on scanning your completed black and white artwork and vectorizing it.\nI&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve read tutorials on how to vectorize your work. Heck, I&#8217;ve written a few myself. But having a process outlined by shortcut will save you time and make a great reference. (I can&#8217;t be the only one who references my own blog posts when working on things.)\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Think_About_Your_Drawing_Size\"><\/span>Think About Your Drawing Size<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nThis may seem obvious, but it&#8217;s something that I&#8217;ve learned the hard way. When you&#8217;re drawing something that is ultimately going to be scanned, it helps if the piece of paper you&#8217;re drawing on will fit in your scanner. I know. What I just said is ridiculous, but it&#8217;s true. Don&#8217;t end up with something that will require multiple scans and then stitching it together in Photoshop. Major time waster.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Scanning_Your_Work\"><\/span>Scanning Your Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nScan your work and use your presets. 300dpi at greyscale is perfect. If you&#8217;ve thought ahead and drew your work at 8.5&#8243; x 11&#8243;, you&#8217;re set to use the Letter preset.\nOr, if you&#8217;ve got a smart phone, snap a photo of your work in good lighting and email it to yourself like I did here.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001513\/take-a-photo-or-scan.jpg.webp\" alt=\"take-a-photo-or-scan\" width=\"680\" height=\"524\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22508\">\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shortcuts_in_Photoshop\"><\/span>Shortcuts in Photoshop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nNow you&#8217;re ready to work some keyboard magic.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Open_your_work_CMDO\"><\/span>Open your work: CMD+O<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nNavigate to where you scanned your drawing and open it in Photoshop.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adjust_Your_Levels_CMDL\"><\/span>Adjust Your Levels: CMD+L<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nUse the Levels dialog box to whiten your whites and darken your blacks. You want a super high-contrast drawing. Use the sliders, or use the eyedroppers. Choose the white eyedropper and click on your drawing where you want your whitest-white to be. Then choose the black eyedropper and click where you want your blackest-black to be.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001516\/adjust-levels-in-photoshop.jpg.webp\" alt=\"adjust-levels-in-photoshop\" width=\"680\" height=\"466\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22509\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_a_Rush_Use_CMDSHIFTL\"><\/span>In a Rush? Use CMD+SHIFT+L<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nAuto levels. Boom. Though it usually pays to take the time and hand-tweak your levels like above.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001520\/auto-adjusted-levels.jpg.webp\" alt=\"auto-adjusted-levels\" width=\"680\" height=\"467\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22510\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Select_Your_Work_with_Lasso_L\"><\/span>Select Your Work with Lasso: L<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nUse the Polygonal Lasso tool to draw a loose marquee around your drawing. This will allow you to only choose the parts of the drawing that you want to bring into Illustrator. And if you took a photo instead of scanning, you can use the lasso tool to avoid some vignetting that may have occurred.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001523\/select-work-using-lasso-tool.jpg.webp\" alt=\"select-work-using-lasso-tool\" width=\"680\" height=\"467\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22511\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Want_Square_Go_Marquee_M\"><\/span>Want Square? Go Marquee: M<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nIf you don&#8217;t need a fancy polygonal lasso to select your art, use M for Marquee and draw a plain old box.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Copy_Your_Work_CMDC\"><\/span>Copy Your Work: CMD+C<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nYou&#8217;re copying your selection to paste it into Illustrator next.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shortcuts_in_Illustrator\"><\/span>Shortcuts in Illustrator<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nOpen Illustrator and start a new document (CMD+N) and don&#8217;t worry too much about the document size here. Just hit Enter.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Paste_Your_Drawing_CMDV\"><\/span>Paste Your Drawing: CMD+V<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nPaste your drawing onto your artboard in Illustrator.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001527\/paste-your-drawing-into-illustrator.jpg.webp\" alt=\"paste-your-drawing-into-illustrator\" width=\"680\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22512\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hide_Your_Artboard_CMDSHIFTH\"><\/span>Hide Your Artboard: CMD+SHIFT+H<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nNo need to see the pesky artboard. Work with a distraction-free surface by hiding your artboard.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001531\/no-artboard-needed.jpg.webp\" alt=\"no-artboard-needed\" width=\"680\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22513\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Select_Your_Art_V\"><\/span>Select Your Art: V<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nUse the Selection Tool to select your pasted drawing. Then head on over to the Image Trace panel and choose Black and White Logo. Play with the Threshold, Paths, Corners, and Noise sliders as needed, until your art looks awesome.\nExpand your drawing so you have outlined paths of your art.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001534\/expanded-artwork.jpg.webp\" alt=\"expanded-artwork\" width=\"680\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22514\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ungroup_Twice_CMDSHIFTG\"><\/span>Ungroup Twice: CMD+SHIFT+G<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nSelect your artwork again (V) and ungroup it with CMD+SHIFT+G, twice. Now delete the extra pieces of your drawing that you don&#8217;t need, like the background.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Group_Similar_Objects_CMDG\"><\/span>Group Similar Objects: CMD+G<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nSome pieces of your drawing will need to be grouped. Select them with the Selection Tool (V) and hold down SHIFT to select multiples. Group the selected objects by using CMD+G.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001537\/group-similar-objects.jpg.webp\" alt=\"group-similar-objects\" width=\"680\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22515\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Free_Transform_E\"><\/span>Free Transform: E<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nAre some items sized poorly? Need to rotate something? Hit E for Free Transform. Hold down Shift to adjust with the same proportions. Hit V when you&#8217;re done.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001540\/free-transform-to-fix-sizes.jpg.webp\" alt=\"free-transform-to-fix-sizes\" width=\"680\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22516\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Smooth_Things_Out_SHIFTS\"><\/span>Smooth Things Out: SHIFT+S<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nThe Smooth Tool is underutilized, mostly because there&#8217;s no default keyboard shortcut assigned to it by Illustrator. When paired with Image Trace, the Smooth Tool really shines.\nUse the smooth tool by selecting your drawing piece (V) and then smoothing it out (SHIFT+S) by clicking and dragging over the bumpy edge using your mouse.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001544\/smooth-tool.jpg.webp\" alt=\"smooth-tool\" width=\"680\" height=\"396\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22517\">\nSHIFT+S not working for you? You need to set it up! <strong>The Bonus Tip:<\/strong> Create your own Smooth Tool shortcut by going to Edit &acirc;&dagger;&rsquo; Keyboard Shortcuts&acirc;&euro;&brvbar; (Guess what, the keyboard shortcut for Keyboard Shortcuts is CMD+OPT+SHIFT+K). Find the Smooth Tool by searching for it, then assign it something easy you&#8217;ll remember. I chose SHIFT+S because I wasn&#8217;t using SHIFT+S for anything else. Overwrite the current shortcut if necessary.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001547\/set-your-own-keyboard-shortcuts.jpg.webp\" alt=\"set-your-own-keyboard-shortcuts\" width=\"680\" height=\"700\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22518\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pesky_Anchor_Point_Stuff_Going_On_Use_the_Direct_Selection_Tool_A\"><\/span>Pesky Anchor Point Stuff Going On? Use the Direct Selection Tool: A<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nSelect specific anchor points with the Direct Selection Tool. Click and move them around as you see fit.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Group_of_Pesky_Anchor_Point_Stuff_Use_the_Lasso_Tool_Q\"><\/span>A Group of Pesky Anchor Point Stuff? Use the Lasso Tool: Q<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nDraw a closed shape around the group of anchor points you wish to massage with the Lasso Tool to select them. Then switch to Direct Selection Tool (A) to move the group around.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/04001551\/use-q-lasso-tool-to-select-multiple-anchor-points.jpg.webp\" alt=\"use-q-lasso-tool-to-select-multiple-anchor-points\" width=\"680\" height=\"469\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22520\">\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrangle_with_the_Pen_Tool_P\"><\/span>Wrangle with the Pen Tool: P<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nSometimes there is just one too many anchor points. Add and subtract anchor points with the Pen Tool (P).
