If you do it with some lower denominations, no sweat: scan it up, take a picture or whatever, and edit away. With some denominations and currencies though, it&#8217;s not so easy. Photoshop will actually block you from opening the image.\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/adobe-doesnt-want-you-to-photoshop-money-heres-how-to-do-it-anyway\/no-bills\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23194\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/03230014\/no-bills.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"440\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23194\"><\/a>\nWhat the what?\nNow I get it. Adobe doesn&#8217;t want us using their software to counterfeit bills, which makes sense. (It&#8217;d create a ton of bad press if all of a sudden people were printing money like crazy all thanks to a Creative Cloud subscription.) But what if you had less nefarious plans? What if you just wanted to make some cool designs either onto the bank notes or using them in a pattern? Well, let&#8217;s figure out how to get around the baddies, shall we?\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_1_Find_an_Image\"><\/span>Step 1: Find an Image<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nAfter a quick Google search, I found a ton of scanned Canadian currency. A bunch of it has &#8220;Specimen&#8221; printed on the outside, but we want the legit stuff, so I pulled from the non-labelled models.\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/adobe-doesnt-want-you-to-photoshop-money-heres-how-to-do-it-anyway\/older-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23195\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/03230017\/older-2.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"458\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23195\"><\/a>\nI started off with an older $2 bill, and had no problems opening it up. So next, I tried the $5.\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/adobe-doesnt-want-you-to-photoshop-money-heres-how-to-do-it-anyway\/5-bill\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23196\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/03230022\/5-bill.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"559\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23196\"><\/a>\nIn an interesting twist, I could open up the original jpeg of the bill in Photoshop, no problem. But when I attempted to open up the screenshot to edit it for this post, it gave me the anti-coutnerfeit message. Weird.\nI decided to take it to the next level and go with a $100 bill, which gave me the same message. Let&#8217;s check out the workaround.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_2_Start_In_Illustrator_Not_Photoshop\"><\/span>Step 2: Start In Illustrator, Not Photoshop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nFirst, I opened up the jpeg in Adobe Illustrator.\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/adobe-doesnt-want-you-to-photoshop-money-heres-how-to-do-it-anyway\/100-bill-ai\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23197\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/03230027\/100-bill-ai.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"515\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23197\"><\/a>\nNext, I saved it as an Illustrator file. Then I opened up that file in Photoshop.\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/adobe-doesnt-want-you-to-photoshop-money-heres-how-to-do-it-anyway\/ai-import\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/03230030\/ai-import.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"441\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23200\"><\/a>\nAnd, just like that, tada!\n<a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/adobe-doesnt-want-you-to-photoshop-money-heres-how-to-do-it-anyway\/bill-in-ps\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23201\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2015\/04\/03230034\/bill-in-ps.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"533\" class=\"align center size-full wp-image-23201\"><\/a>\n<strong>Tip:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t have Illustrator? No problem. All you need is an app that will open the image and is capable of saving it as a PDF. Preview for Mac is a good alternative.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Responsibly\"><\/span>Use Responsibly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nNow remember, we&#8217;re not condoning the counterfeiting of money, because that&#8217;s highly illegal. That being said, there are legitimate use cases for using money imagery in design. As an example, just look at the header image for this article. We wanted to show a pile of money, but that photo was one that was blocked by Photoshop by default. Using this simple trick, we were able to get the effect that we wanted. Pretty handy!\n<strong>Legal disclaimer:<\/strong> In many countries, there are specific laws governing editing of currency related images.
