It’s clear there’s a lot that we could’ve done better, and I want to apologize for the frustration we caused that I know some of you are feeling right now. The entire Creative Market team cares so deeply about this community, so I wanted to let you know how much we appreciate all of the honest feedback you’ve given us around how the licensing might impact you personally. We hear you, we feel your passion, and we’re taking your feedback to heart.
I also want to use this post to share some background on why we made the license changes, clarify some confusion that I’ve seen, and continue to hear your concerns.
Before diving in, I would encourage you to read through the License FAQ if you haven’t yet, where we tried to make the new license terms as easy to understand as possible.
Update: Read our follow up post, Our Plan to Fix Licenses

Why the Change?

From the beginning, Creative Market has always just had a single license, known as the SimpleLicense. While the goal was to make this license simple, it also had a few significant shortcomings that created customer confusion on a regular basis:

It was based around a concept of “core valueâ€, where the items you purchased from Creative Market could be used in new end products so long as they didn’t make up the “core value†of the new end product. The problem here is that it was never clear what constituted making up the “core value†of a product, which was confusing for many customers.

The SimpleLicense didn’t offer the ability for an item making up the core value of a new end product to be sold. In many cases, this meant that customers had no way to use items purchased from Creative Market in a product offered for sale, which can be done with traditional extended licenses from other sites out there. We’d hear from customers all the time that our licensing options were too limited, and some shops even started creating their own Extended License versions of their products on the site as a way to give customers what they were asking for, but ultimately ran counter to the “official†license customers were purchasing from us.

What’s Different Now?

We decided to resolve these SimpleLicense shortcomings and build Extended Licenses directly into the product, and these are the main changes that we made:

Because we were adding a new Extended License, it didn’t make sense to call our general license the “SimpleLicense†any more. For a lot of customers, the SimpleLicense wasn’t so simple, so we decided to rename it to the “Standard Licenseâ€.

In the Standard License, we replaced the ambiguous concept of “core value†with more clearly-defined terms: use in a new end product, whether it makes up the core value or not, so long as it’s not offered for sale.

We added a new Extended License option, to allow customers to use items in a new end product that is offered for sale, without having to worry about the ambiguous “core value†concept. Using an item in a new end product where it does make up the core value is something that’s never been possible, even as part of the SimpleLicense.

That’s about it. Just about everything else is consistent with the original SimpleLicense.

Clearing Up Confusion

I also want to address a couple of common questions and misconceptions that I’ve seen, to clear up any confusion that may be out there.
“Why did you just raise prices 10x?â€
We didn’t raise any prices, we just added an additional Extended License option for those that require additional usage rights. For most customers, especially those doing commercial or client work, the Standard License will cover your needs in the same way that the SimpleLicense did before.
Also, shop owners have full control over all of their pricing on the site. While the default price for an Extended License is 10x the price of a Standard License to fairly compensate shop owners for the additional rights they are giving up, shop owners can change the Extended License price for any of their products at any time, and we’ve even seen many instances where shops are offering an Extended License for the same price as a Standard License, which means even more rights for customers (see Typographer’s December Dream Bundle, for example).
“Do I have to buy an Extended License for commercial use?”
You do not, since “commercial use” is not the same as “offered for saleâ€. I see a lot of confusion around these terms, so I want to be explicit around what they mean. All use, including commercial use and client work, is allowed under the Standard License, so long as the end product you create is not offered for sale. For example, you can buy graphics to include in a branding campaign, or on a billboard, or for a client website, etc., all under the Standard License, and that is 100% acceptable. On the other hand, if you want to use graphics you purchased in a design printed on t-shirts and mugs that you offer for sale, you would need an Extended License.
“Do I have to purchase a separate license for a font/brush/other installable item for each project I use it in?â€
No, a single license will do just fine. Item usage terms are still the same as they were with the prior SimpleLicense. All Installable Items (Fonts and Add-Ons) are one license per seat, and can be used on an unlimited number of projects. This is true for Installable Items under both the Extended License and the Standard License. For all other items, they can only be used in a single project.
“How do these new licenses affect the products I’ve purchased before?â€
Your previous purchases are not impacted in any way. They still retain the original SimpleLicense that you purchased them under.

This Is Where You Come In

We’re committed to making the licensing on Creative Market as simple, straightforward, inclusive, and fair as it can be, so I want to continue to hear from everyone in the community. After reading this post and the FAQ, what concerns do you still have about the license terms? Do you have a use-case that falls through the cracks with the new licenses? And most importantly, if you were responsible for licensing at Creative Market, what would you change to resolve your concerns?
Feel free to leave a comment here, or email me directly if you prefer. I’d love to hear from you.
Finally, we’re also working to put together a select group of community members across shop owners, customers, and affiliates, who we can go to on a regular basis for thoughts and feedback around features we’re considering, in the process of building, or have recently launched. If you’re interested in being a part of this group, please let us know that as well – it would be great to hear your perspective on a regular basis.
Thanks for helping to make the Creative Market community so special.
Aaron
Co-Founder & CEO

After releasing our new license updates yesterday afternoon, it’s been tough reading many of your comments on the changes.
