So, since we&acirc;&euro;&trade;ve already done an article on companies that updated their logos <i>badly<\/i>, let&acirc;&euro;&trade;s take a look at the ones who chose not to do it at all. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Monster_Energy\"><\/span>1. Monster Energy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010439\/monster-energy-drink-logo.jpg.webp\" alt=\"monster-energy-drink-logo\" width=\"680\" height=\"495\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32465\"><\/p>\n<p>Originally designed in 2002, it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s aged about as well as the music of Avril Lavigne. The overall concept is solid: it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s meant to look as if the can was slashed open by a&#8230; Yeah. The problem is that the execution&acirc;&euro;&rdquo;between the gradient shadow inside the logo, the odd border around the name, and especially the motion blur that sometimes appears around it&acirc;&euro;&rdquo;looks straight out of Photoshop Elements 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Not to mention the &acirc;&euro;&oelig;Papyrus meets high school notebook drawing&acirc;&euro; font.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Capital_One\"><\/span>2. Capital One<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010443\/C1_Core_2CG_RGB.jpg-e1453265533845.jpg.webp\" alt=\"C1_Core_2CG_RGB.jpg\" width=\"680\" height=\"307\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32466\"><\/p>\n<p>Capital One&acirc;&euro;&trade;s old logo wasn&acirc;&euro;&trade;t very visually impressive. It was an odd mixture of serif and sans-serif fonts, in mismatched sizes and bland colors, that neither said anything nor communicated much of an image. But thankfully, with their 2008 redesign, they fixed that with a harmonious new logo that made great use of color and&acirc;&euro;&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Nah they just added a swoosh. A swoosh with a gradient. Problem solved.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Samsung\"><\/span>3. Samsung<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010450\/Samsung_Logo.svg_-e1453265559277.png.webp\" alt=\"Samsung_Logo.svg\" width=\"680\" height=\"224\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32467\"><\/p>\n<p>We understand their reluctance to change this one. Samsung is a titan&acirc;&euro;&rdquo;the company alone <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2012\/07\/whoa-samsung-is-responsible-for-20-of-south-koreas-economy\/260552\/\">makes up a full fifth of South Korea&acirc;&euro;&trade;s GDP<\/a>. So their brand is obviously working for them. <\/p>\n<p>But on the other hand, it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s a pretty generic logo. White, Helvetica-bold-ish text on a blue oval? What does it mean?<\/p>\n<p>Well, one Thai newspaper has a theory&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010503\/Bj5fCTmIgAEA_HU-copy.png.webp\" alt=\"Bj5fCTmIgAEA_HU copy\" width=\"680\" height=\"800\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32468\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/killua51\/status\/449901506226311168\"><i>From &acirc;&euro;&oelig;TomTam.. Th&acirc;&euro;<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nOn the other hand, the Samsung logo has quickly become a household symbol, and we understand that your opinion might be different. Jacuzzi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No one thinks of Jacuzzi as a trademark anymore, it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s just what we call hot tubs. Unfortunately, judging by their logo, it seems the company itself&acirc;&euro;&trade;s been neglecting their brand, too. The black and white version of it isn&acirc;&euro;&trade;t terrible&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010507\/bkpam285331_jacuzzi_logo_2011_black-e1453265887199.jpg.webp\" alt=\"JACUZZI_LOGO_2011_BLACK\" width=\"680\" height=\"340\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32470\"><\/p>\n<p>Stuck in the mid 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, perhaps, but could be much worse. But when you see the color version of it they use for a lot of their marketing material&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010510\/jacuzzi-logo-e1453265716448.jpg.webp\" alt=\"jacuzzi-logo\" width=\"680\" height=\"283\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32469\"><\/p>\n<p>Eesh.<\/p>\n<p>Where do we start with this one? The mass of gradients? The drop shadows? The brushed aluminum filter that inexplicably shows up on some versions of it?<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010513\/jacuzzi_hot_tub2-e1453265941617.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Print\" width=\"680\" height=\"258\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32471\"><br \/>\nNo matter which way you look at it, this could definitely use some simplification.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Pier_1_Imports\"><\/span>5. Pier 1 Imports<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010517\/2000px-Pier_1_Imports_Logo-e1453266219174.jpg.webp\" alt=\"2000px-Pier_1_Imports_Logo\" width=\"680\" height=\"197\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32475\"><\/p>\n<p>Its investor relations website calls the logo &acirc;&euro;&oelig;Iconic,&acirc;&euro; but also describes itself as &acirc;&euro;&oelig;ever-original, ever evolving.&acirc;&euro;<\/p>\n<p>It&acirc;&euro;&trade;s a bit ironic, since the main reason their logo is iconic is because it hasn&#8217;t evolved. When <a href=\"http:\/\/logos.wikia.com\/wiki\/Logopedia\">Logopedia<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/logos.wikia.com\/wiki\/Pier_1_Imports\">doesn&acirc;&euro;&trade;t even know<\/a> how long you&acirc;&euro;&trade;ve had your current logo, just that it dates back to the last century, that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s probably a bad sign. It&acirc;&euro;&trade;s not particularly original, either, being basically a condensed Impact with a stencil effect added.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Sherwin_Williams\"><\/span>6. Sherwin Williams<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010521\/Sherwin_Williams-e1453266243934.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Sherwin_Williams\" width=\"680\" height=\"963\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32474\"><\/p>\n<p>Sherwin Williams has used the same logo for 110 years, and opinions are divided on whether they should have. &acirc;&euro;&oelig;It conjures images of blood,&acirc;&euro; says Rue Tierney, my frequent co-writer. &acirc;&euro;It&acirc;&euro;&trade;s a classic logo, but when you think about it for a second, it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s bizarre.&acirc;&euro;<\/p>\n<p>However, designer Milton Glaser, creator of the I &acirc;&curren; NY logo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/adfreak\/now-its-sherwin-williams-turn-much-needed-new-logo-right-166701\">calls it<\/a> &acirc;&euro;&oelig;One of the most persistent and memorable surrealist images of our time. The image of paint entirely covering the Earth is as powerful as anything Magritte or Dali ever produced.&acirc;&euro; <\/p>\n<p>However, it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s still possible to keep all the elements of the original while creating a new version that doesn&acirc;&euro;&trade;t make it look like you want to splatter the planet in the remains of your enemies. In 2011, graphic artist Rick Barrack took a stab at creating a new image for the company, with impressive results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010524\/SW_final_logo_1.jpg.webp\" alt=\"SW_final_logo_1\" width=\"680\" height=\"421\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32476\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010528\/SW_paint_can_options_2.jpg.webp\" alt=\"SW_paint_can_options_2\" width=\"680\" height=\"551\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32477\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcodesign.com\/1663585\/you-asked-and-rick-answers-a-revamp-of-the-sherwin-williams-logo\"><i>From Fast Company<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_The_Office_of_Basic_Energy_Sciences\"><\/span>7. The Office of Basic Energy Sciences<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The BES has a logo, but they don&acirc;&euro;&trade;t feature it on their website, choosing instead to use the logo of the US Department of Energy, of which they&acirc;&euro;&trade;re just a part. I wonder why&acirc;&euro;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010532\/BES_logo_lg-e1453266537400.jpg.webp\" alt=\"BES_logo_lg\" width=\"680\" height=\"697\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32478\"><\/p>\n<p>Oh.<\/p>\n<p>I&acirc;&euro;&trade;m not even sure how to describe this: &acirc;&euro;&oelig;psychedelic&acirc;&euro; would be too easy. First of all, we&acirc;&euro;&trade;re given no clue what the map is even supposed to represent. I assume it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s some kind of heat or topographical map of the Earth, but who&acirc;&euro;&trade;s to know? The three blotches look like cells dividing, but that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s the only sense I can make of it. Not to mention the lack-of-effort Aerial title and slogan, both the same size.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_PriceRite\"><\/span>8. PriceRite<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010537\/o-e1453266567755.jpg.webp\" alt=\"o\" width=\"680\" height=\"454\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32479\"><\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz_photos\/price-rite-worcester-2?select=8GDPT8vEG6UJCEHeW24RKg\">From Yelp<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>It&acirc;&euro;&trade;s probably telling that there are no high-resolution images of the logo itself online, just user-submitted photos of the stores bearing it.<\/p>\n<p>This rivals Samsung for the blandest entry. This is a logo that simply says &acirc;&euro;&oelig;We are a grocery store. What else do you expect from us?&acirc;&euro; Sure, we appreciate their honesty, but we can&acirc;&euro;&trade;t help but wonder if they could use something with a bit more flair, something more unique?<\/p>\n<p>Well, at least the version used on their website lets us know what country they&acirc;&euro;&trade;re from.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Atlus_Games\"><\/span>9. Atlus Games<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010543\/wr1fwodnexrbg7vck1uu.png.webp\" alt=\"wr1fwodnexrbg7vck1uu\" width=\"680\" height=\"358\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32480\"><\/p>\n<p>Japanese roleplaying game godheads Atlus redesigned their logo recently, but honestly, we have to wonder why they even bothered.<\/p>\n<p>For a company that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s known for creating colorful fantasy worlds, their logo communicates exactly none of that. And where the old logo, if dull, at least made sense, the new one&acirc;&euro;&trade;s kerning is downright infuriating.<\/p>\n<p>&acirc;&euro;&oelig;I love Atlus games, and they should have a strong logo. But the new one&#8230; I just don&acirc;&euro;&trade;t get it,&acirc;&euro; says Tierney. &acirc;&euro;&oelig;If you&acirc;&euro;&trade;re going to do slimmer letters, why wouldn&acirc;&euro;&trade;t you put them closer together?&acirc;&euro;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10All_of_the_USaE%E2%84%A2s_Spy_Satellite_Logos\"><\/span>10.All of the US&acirc;&euro;&trade;s Spy Satellite Logos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You might have seen the mission logos &acirc;&euro;&ldquo; which end up as patches on the astronauts&acirc;&euro;&trade; clothing &acirc;&euro;&ldquo; that NASA creates for each mission into space. <\/p>\n<p>Turns out the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) does the same thing for their spy satellite launches, but since they&acirc;&euro;&trade;re much less famous, they have much more leeway to put whatever they want on them. That&acirc;&euro;&trade; why some of them seem like rejected fantasy novel covers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010547\/dragons.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale.jpg.webp\" alt=\"dragons.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale\" width=\"680\" height=\"359\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32481\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010551\/wings.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale.jpg.webp\" alt=\"wings.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale\" width=\"680\" height=\"359\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32482\"><\/p>\n<p>Others make very little sense&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010556\/great-bear.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale.jpg.webp\" alt=\"great-bear.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale\" width=\"680\" height=\"680\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32483\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010559\/bull-rocket.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale.jpg.webp\" alt=\"bull-rocket.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale\" width=\"680\" height=\"359\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32485\"><\/p>\n<p>And some are downright ominous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010604\/nrol-39.jpg.webp\" alt=\"nrol-39\" width=\"680\" height=\"600\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32484\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2016\/01\/10010607\/phoenix.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale.jpg.webp\" alt=\"phoenix.jpg__600x0_q85_upscale\" width=\"680\" height=\"450\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32486\"><\/p>\n<p><i>Images from <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/creepy-kitschy-and-geeky-patches-us-spy-satellites-180953562\/?no-ist\"><i>Smithsonian Magazine<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, we know it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s a bit unfair to include these, since so many of them seem to be in-jokes. In fact, since they were (probably) never intended to be serious, these logos fit their purpose perfectly and should never be changed. But I knew I had to write about them somewhere, and a series of logos this goofy deserves a roast.
