This article has been updated to reflect those changes.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The idea of making money while you sleep is nothing new. Passive income has been a popular buzzword for the past couple of years. One way to generate such passive income is with affiliate marketing. If you want to earn money but don&#8217;t have anything to sell, affiliate income comes into play and can leave you making some pretty decent change each month. <\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-affiliate-marketing\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Affiliate_Marketing\"><\/span>What is Affiliate Marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By definition, <strong>affiliate marketing<\/strong> is when you earn a commission from a sale by promoting someone else&#8217;s product. It&#8217;s a great way to earn revenue without having to invest time in developing your own product.<\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-affiliate-marketing-work\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_Affiliate_Marketing_Work\"><\/span>How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You choose a product that you want to share with your audience. You recommend it to them via your blog, email list, social media, etc.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then, they purchase the product through your unique URL.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You receive anything from a percentage of the sale to free products or credits towards something.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth noting that you can also build unique URLs with your affiliate code that don&#8217;t take readers directly to a product. Instead, it could take them to a collection of products, a content page, or some other intermediate step in the purchase funnel. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/partners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creative Market Affiliate Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> rewards you with a 15% cut of any new customer&acirc;&euro;&trade;s first purchase, and a 5% cut of any returning customer&#8217;s purchase made within 30 days of clicking on your referral link.<\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-i-use-affiliate-marketing\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_I_Use_Affiliate_Marketing\"><\/span>How I Use Affiliate Marketing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I only share affiliate links on my blog and through email promoting products that I have personally vetted and recommend. I feel like this is the best way to recommend something because I can testify that I believe it helped me and it could help my audience too.<\/span><br><\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When it comes to promoting links to products from Creative Market, my rules are laxer. I share Creative Market product affiliate links on Pinterest and may have not used the actual product. However, I choose products that my audience on Pinterest would find relevant to them.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consider what you will be promoting and how you want to set rules for yourself.<\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-follow-the-rules\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Follow_the_Rules\"><\/span>Follow the Rules<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It&#8217;s imperative that, if you&#8217;re going to implement affiliate links to earn a commission, you properly disclose what you are doing. Disclosures build trust with your audience and it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s the law in the United States. I can only attest to how things work in the United States, and I recommend speaking with a lawyer. I am not a lawyer, and this should not be considered legal advice.<\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-disclosure\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_Disclosure\"><\/span>What is a Disclosure?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A disclosure is the fine print. It will give the reader all the information about the product they may be purchasing as well as what you&#8217;re gaining from promoting it. <\/span><br><\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The FTC is a bipartisan federal agency in the United States with a unique dual mission to protect consumers and promote competition. They are basically enforcing that products and services are truthfully represented.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The FTC has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/tips-advice\/business-center\/guidance\/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated guide with a list of FAQs<\/a> regarding advertising and endorsement of products. If you&acirc;&euro;&trade;re in the United States, educate yourself on this before starting affiliate marketing. To be fully compliant, read the FTC&#8217;s .COM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/attachments\/press-releases\/ftc-staff-revises-online-advertising-disclosure-guidelines\/130312dotcomdisclosures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disclosures document<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-to-place-disclosures\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_Place_Disclosures\"><\/span>Where to Place Disclosures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some basic guidelines from the document you should be aware of before you start using affiliate links. Your disclosure must be clear:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Place the disclosure as close as possible to the triggering claim. <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When using hyperlinks, the link should be obvious.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Display disclosures before consumers make a decision to buy.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Repeat disclosures, as needed, on lengthy websites and in connection with repeated claims. Disclosures may also have to be repeated if consumers have multiple routes through a website. <\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use plain language and syntax so that consumers understand the disclosures.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some best practices for how to word affiliate disclosures can be found here on <a href=\"http:\/\/bloggylaw.com\/blogger-disclosure-examples-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloggy Law<\/a>.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With blog posts, you will want to place your disclosure upfront that clearly spells out your affiliation and what you gain from it. When using social media, you can use hashtags like #ad #sponsor, etc.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since we&acirc;&euro;&trade;re discussing how to use Pinterest for your Creative Market Partner links, be sure to use words that clearly define that it is an affiliate link like <em>Ad<\/em> or <em>Sponsored<\/em> in the beginning of your description.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are dedicating an entire board on Pinterest to advertising your affiliate links, you should disclose that in the Board description. Indicate here that you get compensation for sharing these links.<\/span><\/p><h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-your-articles-should-also-contain-disclosures-for-affiliate-links\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_articles_should_also_contain_disclosures_for_affiliate_links\"><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your articles should also contain disclosures for affiliate links.<\/span><\/i><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-pinterest-for-affiliate-marketing-earnings\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Using_Pinterest_for_Affiliate_Marketing_Earnings\"><\/span>Using Pinterest for Affiliate Marketing Earnings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As I mentioned earlier, one method I use for promoting Creative Market affiliate links is my Pinterest account. As your Pinterest account grows and you continue to pin content that is related to your brand, you can rapidly increase your earnings.<\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-be-successful-with-pinterest\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Be_Successful_With_Pinterest\"><\/span>How to Be Successful With Pinterest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brand your Pinterest account. Only create and maintain boards that are relevant to your audience. Hide boards and make them secret if they are not something your audience cares about.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Join Group Boards to grow your audience and reach more people.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pin consistently throughout the day using an automated scheduling program like <a href=\"https:\/\/boardbooster.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BoardBooster<\/a>* or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tailwindapp.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tailwind<\/a>*. I pin about 30-50 times a day. Here&acirc;&euro;&trade;s how I did it:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I choose ten products from Creative Market to pin each day.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I prefer to look at the latest releases.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I do this process Monday-Friday, giving myself a weekend break.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I choose products I feel my audience would enjoy, and may have even purchased before.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I use Tailwind to schedule my pins to all of the boards that are relevant to that pin and I change the intervals so they spread out each day on the various boards, not to be spammy.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I make sure my descriptions have keywords that matter (Pinterest is a search engine, remember!)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I use the word, Ad in my Pinterest description to note that this is an affiliate link. Make sure to do your research about affiliate links as they may change. You must disclose properly!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I paste my affiliate link from Creative Market in the pin source URL spot.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That&acirc;&euro;&trade;s it! It takes me 10 minutes a day to do this, and it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s the first thing I do each morning before I jump into anything else.<\/span><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-watch-video-instructions\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Watch_Video_Instructions\"><\/span>Watch Video Instructions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first month I tested this experiment and I earned $108 from Creative Market in affiliate partner earnings.
