That&acirc;&euro;&trade;s where designers and artists come into the picture, taking the intangible values of this <a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/what-on-earth-is-a-design-aesthetic-why-do-i-need-one\">aesthetic<\/a> and giving it its own visual language. Thanks to their efforts, when we say the word &acirc;&euro;&oelig;jazz,&acirc;&euro; we now automatically associate specific styles and images with the word.\nJazz-inspired design came into its own in the 1920s and 1930s, so, appearance-wise, it shares a lot of elements with design movements that were in full swing at the time, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/art-deco-design-style-examples\">Art Deco<\/a>. As you&acirc;&euro;&trade;ll soon find out, there&acirc;&euro;&trade;s so much more to this trend than music. Its visual component is equally interesting, whether you&acirc;&euro;&trade;re a full-fledged designer or just a connoisseur who has an appreciation for detail.\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_History_of_Jazz_Style\"><\/span>The History of Jazz Style<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nNo thorough look at this jazz-inspired aesthetic is complete without also taking a quick look at the history of the musical genre itself. This is a highly thought-provoking art form because of its uniquely American perspective. Regarded by many as an American original, jazz grew out of ragtime and blues influences in the African-American neighborhoods of New Orleans, circa the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> and early 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries, but that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s not all. It also counts European military band music and West African musical and cultural expression as influences.\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51050 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2018\/12\/17063033\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-26-at-3.34.05-PM.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"559\"> Image Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Louis_Armstrong_restored.jpg\">Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division<\/a>\nFrom the very beginning, this musical genre trailblazed an unmistakable sound that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s typified by the following elements:\n<\/p><ul>\n \t<li>Polyrhythms (the utilization of at least two, usually conflicting, rhythms)<\/li>\n \t<li>Improvisation<\/li>\n \t<li>Call-and-response vocals<\/li>\n \t<li>Blue notes (notes that are played or sung at a different pitch from normal)<\/li>\n \t<li>The presence of swing<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>\nThe curious thing about it is its ability to assimilate a plethora of local, regional and even national musical cultures, thereby giving rise to a host of different approaches to jazz. Some of its strains include:\n<\/p><ul>\n \t<li>Cool<\/li>\n \t<li>Free<\/li>\n \t<li>Kansas City<\/li>\n \t<li>New Orleans<\/li>\n \t<li>Gypsy<\/li>\n \t<li>Bebop<\/li>\n \t<li>Hard bop<\/li>\n \t<li>Modal<\/li>\n \t<li>Jazz-rock fusion<\/li>\n \t<li>Afro-Cuban<\/li>\n \t<li>Latin<\/li>\n \t<li>Smooth<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>\nSuffice it say, this musical genre is <a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/design-trend-report-eclectic-collage\">eclectic<\/a>.\n<\/p><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Art_Deco_Makes_Its_Mark\"><\/span>Art Deco Makes Its Mark<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nHowever, to understand jazz style from a visual-design perspective, we have to look at the decade in which it truly became popular in the U.S. We define popular as the moment in time when this music achieved nationwide success in America, which is a feat that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s particularly impressive when you consider the absence of the Internet in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century!\nOnly a few decades after its humble beginnings at approximately turn-of-the-century New Orleans, jazz had become very big during the 1920s and 1930s, not just in African-American culture. In fact, the Roaring Twenties&acirc;&euro;&rdquo;that iconic period of post-World War I American expansion and prosperity&acirc;&euro;&rdquo;is virtually synonymous with this musical style. And that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s precisely where we get our first clue as to the visual design language of jazz.\nYou see, during the Roaring Twenties, the design trend that was sweeping the country was <a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/art-deco-fonts\">Art Deco<\/a>, in all its geometric, technology and machine-obsessed glory. Naturally, the most famous design trend of the time <em>had<\/em> to rub off on the most famous musical phenomenon of its day. This is generally how pop culture works.\nArt Deco actually originated in France before the outbreak of World War I. By the end of the war and most definitely by the mid-1920s, when jazz was already in vogue in the U.S., Art Deco had spread to most of Europe and also made its way across the Atlantic to the shores of America. Around this timeframe, the Chrysler Building, perhaps the most iconic tall building of its time, became a glorious homage to Art Deco architecture.\nIt&acirc;&euro;&trade;s in this context where we have to evaluate the look of jazz style.\nTo help us along, it&acirc;&euro;&trade;s useful if we look at a few, noteworthy examples of Jazz Age graphic designs to see this connection.\nFirst up is artist and writer Albert Gleizes&acirc;&euro;&trade; <em>Composition for &acirc;&euro;&oelig;Jazz.&acirc;&euro;<\/em> While a Cubist work, it also overlaps with some notable elements of Art Deco. Guggenheim Museum<\/a>\nFor instance, there are many straight and curved lines, along with geometric shapes (triangles and rectangles) in the piece. Its sleek, shadow-casting, and geometrically influenced fonts are right at home with the Art Deco aesthetic.\nThen, there&acirc;&euro;&trade;s the long-defunct magazine called <em>The Chicagoan<\/em>. Long forgotten by anyone who&acirc;&euro;&trade;s not a history buff, this magazine was published at the height of the Jazz Age and aimed to be Chicago&acirc;&euro;&trade;s answer to New York&acirc;&euro;&trade;s <em>The New Yorker<\/em>. Also notable is the heavy use of black as a way to create a mood of mystery.\nThe link between jazz style and Art Deco is so strong that this connection is being made even today. Let&acirc;&euro;&trade;s fast-forward all the way to the cover of the 2017 book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jazz-Age-American-Style-1920s\/dp\/0300224052\">The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s<\/a><\/em>, which uses numerous Art Deco elements that are apparent to any fan of the design trend:\n<\/p><ul>\n \t<li>Geometric shapes (circles, curves, etc.)<\/li>\n \t<li>Floral patterns that are stylized<\/li>\n \t<li>Well-defined lines<\/li>\n \t<li>Very streamlined and sleek forms<\/li>\n<\/ul><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51054 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/2018\/12\/17063058\/Screen-Shot-2018-11-26-at-3.48.48-PM.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"753\"><p> Image Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jazz-Age-American-Style-1920s\/dp\/0300224052\">The Cleveland Museum of Art<\/a>\nJazz style and touches of Art Deco are forever interlinked in the language of design.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Characteristics_of_Jazz_Style\"><\/span>The Characteristics of Jazz Style<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p>\nTo further explore this design trend, we have to home in on what makes this aesthetic stand out from all the rest. As mentioned, there are strong Art Deco influences in anything that&acirc;&euro;&trade;s been inspired by jazz, but it still needs to be stressed that jazz style and Art Deco aren&acirc;&euro;&trade;t one and the same.\nWith that in mind, here&acirc;&euro;&trade;s how to recognize this trend:\n<\/p><ul>\n \t<li>Stylization (of typography, illustrations, etc.)<\/li>\n \t<li>Evocative qualities (harkening back to times gone by, such as through <a href=\"https:\/\/creativemarket.com\/blog\/10-creative-examples-of-vintage-typography\">vintage<\/a> elements)<\/li>\n \t<li>Sleekness<\/li>\n \t<li>Suaveness<\/li>\n \t<li>Good use of color contrast<\/li>\n \t<li>The presence of golden hues and tones<\/li>\n \t<li>Neutral colors, in particular, black<\/li>\n \t<li>Musical and simple shapes and icons<\/li>\n \t<li>Diverse typefaces (slabs, scripts, sans serifs, etc.)<\/li>\n \t<li>Geometric figures and shapes<\/li>\n \t<li>Streamlined shapes<\/li>\n \t<li>Silhouettes<\/li>\n \t<li>Monochromatic (especially black and white) elements<\/li>\n \t<li>Conservative (at least in fashion)<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>\nThe best way to get even more familiar with this design trend is to take a close look at several graphic-design assets to spot these various elements in action.\n<\/p><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jazz_Style_in_Graphic_Design\"><\/span>Jazz Style in Graphic Design<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jazz_Vintage_Newspaper_Poster\"><\/span>Jazz | Vintage Newspaper Poster<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3><p>\nThis is a great example of how this design trend&acirc;&euro;&trade;s roots are in the old-fashioned, vintage look. During the Roaring Twenties, Art Deco was the design heavyweight, making it natural for the visual language of jazz to be so significantly touched by it.\nThat&acirc;&euro;&trade;s not to say that jazz style didn&acirc;&euro;&trade;t develop its own, unique characteristics.
