The 80s brought a new visual language to editorial pages, advertising, magazines, and other print publications, shaped by emerging technology, bold campaigns, and the limitations and possibilities of print.

Today, those same ideas are finding their way back into posters, branding, magazines, social media posts, and digital design.

In this tutorial, we’ll break down the key elements of 80s editorial design and show you how to recreate the look in Photoshop from choosing the right retro fonts to building an editorial layout and adding an offset-print texture.

We’ll explore two different approaches to the style, plus a free grain texture you can use to give your own work that printed, slightly imperfect finish.

Hyped about the whole retro look? Personal computers were making their way into homes, digital tools were beginning to influence the design process, and pop culture was full of futuristic references. Films like Blade Runner and The Terminator imagined very different versions of the future, while brands such as Apple, Nike, and Volkswagen were pushing print advertising in new directions.

That atmosphere had a big influence on 80s graphic design.

Print advertising became increasingly image-led and statement-driven. Typography was often large and attention-grabbing, while photography was given plenty of space to make an impact. The result was a style that could feel polished and experimental at the same time.

So,what makes an 80s editorial design feel, well, 80s?

Key Elements of 80s Editorial Design and Unicode Characters

Oversized typography that immediately grabs attention

Bold and condensed font styles for headlines and statements

Classic serif fonts for longer editorial copy

High-contrast layouts with strong visual hierarchy

Cutout photography and prominently positioned images

Tight letter spacing and carefully controlled typography

Print grain and texture inspired by offset printing

Slight imperfections that make the finished design feel printed rather than perfectly digital

Before modern design software made it possible to move, resize, and edit almost anything with a few clicks, editorial layouts were a much more hands-on process.

Tools such as Aldus PageMaker and Microsoft Publisher were part of the emerging desktop publishing landscape, but many designers were still setting up advertisements manually using knives, paper, type, and physical artwork. Layout, retouching, font setup, and image placement often required a much more tactile approach.

Designers such as April Greiman embraced new technology and explored what machines like the Macintosh and Quantel Paintbox could bring to graphic design. At the same time, commercial advertising continued to rely heavily on strong compositions, clear messaging, and carefully considered typography.

That tension between the handmade and the technological is part of what makes retro editorial design so interesting today. You can recreate the look digitally while still borrowing some of that physical, imperfect quality.

At its heart, an editorial layout needs to make information easy to navigate. A headline should tell readers where to look first, while supporting copy, images, captions, and smaller details create a natural path through the page.

80s Editorial Fonts: Typography & Style

Typography does a lot of the heavy lifting in an 80s editorial layout.

Look at iconic advertising from the era and you’ll often find bold, readable sans serif fonts used to make a statement or direct attention to an important message. For longer blocks of copy, more traditional serif fonts created a sense of editorial authority and contrast.

When choosing fonts for an editorial design, think about how each style will function on the page. A display font might work beautifully for a headline, while a more restrained serif or sans serif can make an article easier to read.

Some of the most useful font styles to explore for an 80s-inspired layout include condensed serifs, bold sans serifs, high-contrast editorial typefaces, classic serif fonts, and oversized display lettering.

When choosing 80s fonts for your own design, look for a few characteristics:

Condensed serif fonts with distinctive, high-contrast letterforms

Bold sans serifs that work well at large sizes

Editorial serif fonts for longer passages of text

Oversized display type used as part of the composition

Tight tracking for a more compact headline treatment

Distressed or printed treatments that mimic physical reproduction

Editorial typography isn’t only about decoration. The same principles apply whether you’re laying out a magazine feature, an opinion piece, a newspaper article, or a brand story. Typography helps establish hierarchy, separate sections, and make longer writing easier to follow.

For this tutorial, we’ll use two Creative Market fonts to explore both sides of the style: a bold sans serif for the headline-led version and an editorial serif for the more information-focused layout.

Offset Print Texture & Grain

Texture is another important part of the look.

Offset printing was widely used for magazines, newspapers, advertising, and other printed publications, with colors separated into cyan, magenta, yellow, and black during the printing process. The physical reproduction process could introduce subtle imperfections into the paper and printed image, creating the grain, softness, and occasional misregistration that designers now recreate digitally.

That’s part of the appeal of 80s print design. A perfectly clean digital image can feel too polished, while a little grain or offset texture gives the design more physical character.

You can recreate this effect in Photoshop by layering texture over your artwork, adjusting blend modes, or using a Photoshop action designed to mimic vintage offset printing.

How to Recreate the Look

Now that we have an orientation and several design elements to focus on, we can start designing.

Most photographic elements in late 80s editorial and ad layouts were positioned prominently on the page. The focus was on the product or person, without any distracting backgrounds.

I chose the Nineties Headliner by Jen Wagner Co for the first version of our ad and the Seriously Nostalgic Serif by Nicky Laatz for our second version.

To recreate the characteristics of the offset printing technique digitally, you can layer in some of the effects inside Photoshop or take it a step further and use an Offset Print Action like FLYERWRK‘s.

Free Grain Texture

Hyped about the whole retro look? Is it a short, image-led advertisement? A magazine article? A longer piece of editorial content? The answer will help determine how much space you give your headline, images, and body copy.

Choose an eggshell white tone (I used #f3f2eb) through the solid color option to imitate an older kind of paper. Once you’re happy with your color, merge it with the background by pressing CMD+E on your keyboard to avoid having too many layers.

Now place an image of your choice. I chose a dominant image from Wayhome Studio that worked well with my headline.

Next, use the Object Selection tool to cut out and isolate the subject. It doesn’t have to be pixel perfect because we will roughen the image texture at the end and we’re not going to create billboard-sized posters.

When you’re happy with the result, click on the masking option while the selection is still active. From here, you can still redefine the mask if needed.

Since our first creation is going to be more about the information, we’ll go with an editorial serif font. Seriously Nostalgic font from Nicky Laatz is just perfect for this use case and mimics the style pretty well. To match the retro headline look, use uppercase at the beginning of every word. For a more authentic look, the letter spacing needs to be as narrow as possible. I overlayed some parts to make it a bit more 2022.

Since we’re in an information-centric editorial, the next part will be similar to InDesign’s text wrap feature. We’ll make a custom text box with the pen tool in Photoshop.

Make a selection to mark the area where you’d like to place text. Save and name it by double-clicking on the work path in your path panel. You can modify the path later.

By using the Text Tool inside the path selection, Photoshop will fit it inside the area you defined before.

Although it already looks pretty 80s, we need to add a final touch: the offset print texture. The Seriously Nostalgic font comes with some handy Photoshop actions and filters. I’m using the included action “RM15”. The font pack comes with two Photoshop actions that create a noisy print look.

Instead of leaning on body copy for messaging, this ad centers attention on the image below our bold headline.

Getting inspired

A moodboard is a great starting point when you’re exploring an unfamiliar design style. Collect examples of 80s editorial design, magazine covers, newspaper layouts, advertising, typography, photography, and print textures to see which elements keep appearing.

Don’t only look at the finished design. Pay attention to the details: how much space the headline takes up, where the images sit, how the body copy is arranged, and how the typography changes between different types of content.

You can also look at contemporary editorial work for ideas. Designers are constantly borrowing from older visual languages and finding ways to make them work for today’s readers, brands, publications, and social media.

Inspiration & Sources

Once you understand the building blocks, there are plenty of directions you can take the style.

Look at popular 80s design trends, magazine covers, newspaper layouts, advertisements, album artwork, and contemporary editorial projects. Pay attention to how designers use type, images, spacing, and texture to communicate an idea.

You might find a particular font style you love, an interesting way of cropping an image, or a completely different approach to arranging text on the page.

Some other 80s editorial fonts to look at

Serif Fonts

Headline Sans Serifs

What other looks are you into?

Did you enjoy this tutorial?
