Slab serif fonts are serif fonts that typically feature squared, block-like serifs to give a bold, powerful appearance. Slab serifs were first created in the early nineteenth century and were traditionally used in newspapers, especially for headlines. The large serifs common to slab serif typefaces tend to provide less contrast than others in the serif fonts genre but create a higher contrast than sans serifs, which are more formal, traditional typefaces. Unlike a sans serif font or the average serif font, a square serif letterform gives a bolder, sturdier appearance to the text. Examples of where the design features of slabs are ideal include headlines, headings, posters, logos, highlighting programming code, and any web design or branding where the text needs to stand out strongly. Traditionally, those fonts with angular strokes have been among the most popular styles of slab serif fonts. However, the rounded letterforms of newer slab serif type fonts are as popular today for text display purposes as the Clarendon style slab serif typefaces. Another subgenre of popular slab serif fonts is the Egyptian family of fonts, despite these slab fonts bearing little resemblance to the hieroglyphic fonts of the ancient Egyptians.
