Rambutan, SE Asia's "Hairy" Fruit

The name rambutan is derived from the Malay word “rambut” meaning hairy. It's closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the lychee, longan, and mamoncillo (aka guinep, kenep, chenet, canepa, etc).

In Thailand, they were first planted in 1926. Each year in August, an annual fair is held at harvest time.
