300+ The Birds of Australia
About
The Birds of Australia
Considered the “father of bird study in Australia,” John Gould (1804–1881) is one of the most celebrated experts on ornithology worldwide. His book "Birds of Australia" (1840–1848), illustrated by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, (1804–1841) introduced more than 300 new bird species to the world.
Elizabeth Gould (1804–1841) was a British artist and lithographer who created detailed, lifelike illustrations of birds, notably for The Birds of Australia. She produced 84 of the 681 plates in this work, capturing species like the Major Mitchell's Cockatoo with vibrant accuracy before her death in 1841. John Gould (1804–1881), her husband, was an ornithologist and entrepreneur who oversaw the project, described 328 new species, and managed a team of artists, including Henry Constantine Richter, to complete the remaining illustrations. Together, they revolutionized ornithological art with their 1840–1869 publication.
