Yermo - A Laid Back Geo-Slab Font
About the Product
ABOUT
Yermo is a hybrid typeface influenced by 1970s psychedelia, toughened by country grit and modernized with geometric shapes. It was designed to capture a certain blurring of cultural lines between the laid back vibes of Southern California, the gritty Arizona desert and the vibrant latin culture of northern Mexico.
One might say that if Yermo were a person, he’d be an old, pot-smokin’ hippie that retired to the dry hills of southern Arizona. He rides his trusty horse around the cattle ranch by day, and plays a mean latin guitar at the local tavern by night. I imagine he‘s got braided pigtails, not unlike his hero Willie Nelson. And I wouldn't doubt he’d give old Willie a run for his money when it comes to smoking Mary-Jane.
Yermo draws its California influence through slightly bottom-heavy characters. These features are suggestive of typefaces made popular during the hippie era. However, Yermo uses this feature subtly, adding weight to each character base without being overly psychedelic. Selective characters emphasize the 1970s influence, while others take a step back from it. Take the capital “Y,” for example. The tail widens and flares at the bottom, adding a retro flair to certain character combinations, while the capital “C” keeps its heavier base hidden by other unique characteristics. Balancing out Yermo’s retro California vibe is the addition of slab serifs that add a certain Southwestern flair. It's these serifs that give Yermo a strong stance and a bit of a twang.
