This font DOES NOT include LOWERCASE or NUMBERS, as they did not exist in the original font. The lowercase characters in this set are the same as the uppercase. Only basic punctuation is included.

It was very common for 19th century typesetters to use other fonts to substitute punctuation and numerals missing from a particular typeface.

Since they were scanned directly from the pages of original 150 year-old documents, the letters show imperfections common to letterpress printing.

WHAT'S BEHIND THE NAME "BOLD BENECIA BOY"?

Jack Heenan was one of the most famous bare-knuckle prize fighters of the mid-19th century. He was born in West Troy, New York, but began his fighting career as a brawler in Benicia California while working for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. It was here he earned the nickname the “Benicia Boy.”

He climbed, quite literally, onto the world stage in a fight against English champion fighter Tom Sayers outside the Hampshire town of Farmborough on April 17, 1860. After 42 rounds and 2 hours and 27 minutes of bloody combat, the authorities rushed the ring to stop the illegal fight. Heenan and Sayers escaped, and eventually shared a prize purse of £400.

All of our Civil War-era historical fonts were copied entirely from ORIGINAL LETTERS scanned from type specimen, business directories, song sheets, broadsides, and advertisements, printed between 1848 and 1867 gathered from museums, private collections, and the Library of Congress. No cheap work done, but instead with a neatness not to be excelled in the Typographical Art.
