What are the different types of fonts?

While there are many ways to differentiate fonts, the main different categories to start with are serif, sans serif, script, blackletter, display/decorative, and non-Western. What is the difference between a font and a typeface?

The difference between a font and a typeface is that a typeface refers to the overall design, while a font is a specific style, size, or weight within that typeface. This is a bit confusing on its face - we think it’s a bit easier to reference an example. So if “Neue Swiss” is your typeface, "Neue Swiss Bold 12pt" might be your font. Of course, as you’ll find with anything in this wonderful world of fonts, nothing is so simple. What Font License is Right for Me?

A desktop license is the most common license and covers most commercial font usage. You can create graphic designs (logos, signs, etc.) and products (mugs, t-shirts, hats, etc.) for yourself, or your client(s). These are great for logos and branding, movie titles and captions, PDFs, cards, signs and print merchandise. Products may be sold for profit as long as the letters are not the main selling point of your product (like a house number or stamp set). Embedding fonts is not allowed with this license with a few exceptions (such as a PDF reports). All licenses on our site are perpetual, which means you pay once and use it forever. To use a font on your website, you’ll need a web font license. This type of license allows you to embed font files into the CSS code on your site. From there, site visitors can then see and temporarily use your embedded fonts! Web licenses on Creative Market are priced by pageview limits (essentially this means they are priced according to traffic). Beyond the web, we’ve also got you covered for apps and publications. Our app licenses allow you to embed font files in app code. These are best for things like games, mobile apps, and web apps. Meet Lovefern, a romantic, hand calligraphed font with swashes aplenty. Swash lovers... eat your heart out!

Lovefern features a modern calligraphy style with dancing baseline and 26 different swashes that can be applied to the beginning and ends of all lowercase letterforms. Scroll down on the first image to see 20 of the 26+ swashes in action.

To best take advantage of the swashes, software with a GLYPHS panel is strongly recommended. OR, use the Private Use Area to add swashes your software of choice. See tutorial below.

Two Image Charts to help you use the Lovefern Swashes Fonts

Several lines, fern laurels, and paint dots are also included in the Lovefern Swashes fonts. International support for most Western Languages is included. For the separate swashes font, type lowercase a-z for the beginning swashes and uppercase A-Z for the tail end swashes.

Open Type features include contextual alternates and ordinals. Font contains unique pairs and some alternates including lowercase end characters with shorter tails. To access these special characters, use a glyphs panel.

I loved the way this script looked on the product page, but after downloading it, the Kerning on the script is much larger than what is shown. There is space between each letter in this font and they don't flow together naturally like a script should. This can be adjusted in some platforms, but I was looking for easy of use and not expecting to have to tweak it each time I wanted to use it

It is a pretty font, but am a bit disapponted that the swashes do match up as the sample illustrates.

How can I unzip product files?

PC: To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location. To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.

Mac: Double click the .zip file, then search for the product folder or product file.

How do I install a font?

After you unzip your font product files, you will see .OTF or .TTF files. To install a font, just double click on the OTF or TTF file. For more information, check out our Font FAQ.

What software do I need to use this font?

When a font is installed on your computer, it can be used with any program that allows you to create text. Fonts will work in Microsoft Office applications, Adobe software, and almost any other program with a text editor.
