One anchor client can be worth a handful of smaller ones. They’re the one account that can boost your profile, get you a meaningful testimonial or help you get more work. In other words, they’re every web designer’s dream client. But it can be challenging to your work in front of—and noticed by–those clients. Here are some tips to make that happen.
Find a thought leader.
Identify a person, company or local organization that people are aware of and listen to. Maybe your town has a restaurant everyone goes to. Maybe a candidate for local office needs a website. Or, think outside the box and approach dream clients, like a favorite band or indie retailer. Don’t be afraid of trying. At worst, you’ll get a no. At best, you can get your work in front of aspirational clients.
Keep trying.
Put together a strong portfolio and make your presence know on every channel you know, from social media to forums to old-fashioned word of mouth. Make sure you always have current, professional-looking business cards with you. Persistence pays off–you never know who might need your services or be willing to give you a chance.
Make a deal.
Working for a great client is worth offering a discount on your services. Sometimes, it’s even worth doing for free. If a client seems interested, you can offer to do a smaller job, like designing a website for a company event, for free as a test piece. That way, clients cannot only see your work, but what you would do for their brand. This also gives them the chance to work with you and see if you are a good fit.
Get testimonials.
Ask previous satisfied clients for testimonials. Ask them to highlight strengths you think would appeal to an anchor client. For example, if you want to work for a retailer, you might ask for a testimonial that emphasizes your grasp of branding.
Remember, getting an anchor client can take time. Be patient, and keep accepting work as you go along. Even small jobs can help you get noticed.
