Not sure if you’ve heard this one yet, but basketball player LeBron James just signed a lifetime contract with Nike. That’s kind of a big deal, but what does it have to do with design? Well UK company Sawdust was tasked with creating a custom typeface for the player known as “The King,” and, well, here it is:
Now there’s no explanation of the design process, other than this:
Display typeface for NBA basketball player LeBron James, an initiative that saw the font used across his Nike product range. The design of the typeface is based on LeBron’s existing logo.
Client: Nike Basketball
Either way, this is pretty cool deal. Having your own typeface makes branding pretty straightforward, and, since he is the biggest name in basketball nowadays, it makes sense that he’d have his own typeface. Hey, maybe this will start a trend – who knows?
