Flags can be controversial. Sometimes they reflect times and ideas that have long since disappeared, and other times they’re a relic of the past. You don’t see too many flag redesigns nowadays, but New Zealand is doing one right now. They got a ton of submissions, and now there are 40 candidates for the next flag.
This is their current flag.
Why the big change? Well, if you take a quick peek, you’ll notice that outside of one submission, there’s no reference to the Union Jack, the famous U.K. flag. That’s because they wanted to move past the colonization stage of their life as a country, and they also want to differentiate their flag from Australia’s, which is pretty similar if you’re not intimately familiar with the pair.
So here are their options. What do you think?
