Welcome to another chapter of our Behind the Shop series, where we explore the creative minds behind some of the most intriguing shops on Creative Market. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Sophie, a designer who has found her unique voice in the bustling city of Amsterdam. With a background that unexpectedly started in politics and psychology, Sophie eventually found her true passion in graphic design—a path that allows her to blend creativity with structure. Her work, characterized by playful, slightly retro, and elegant elements, is deeply inspired by the vibrant colors and creative community in Amsterdam. Join us as we delve into her creative process, inspirations, and the products that have defined her journey.

What inspired you to pursue graphic design in the first place? What were you working on before?

I’ve always been creative & have always had all kinds of creative hobbies – from ceramics & interior design to painting & photography. It was a surprise to everyone who knows me well that I started off studying politics & psychology instead. However, around half a year into my studies I found myself really missing using creativity in my every day.

I switched to studying graphic design as I feel like it allowed me to be creative but still do that in a more structured way than just being an artist.

I love being organised and graphic design allows me to mix that with my need & want of being creative.

When designing a new brand or website, where does your creative process start? What inspires you?

My process begins with understanding my client and their goals. I research their industry and target audience, aiming to create designs that resonate with the audience and with that also benefit the client!

I find my creative inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, and designs I spot randomly in the world. I especially love finding color palette inspiration through the world around me – I will take photos of scenes in which I love the colors and create color palettes out of that to use in my designs.

How would you define your signature design style?

I think my design style is a bit all over the place but at the same time you can still recognize my designs when you see them. If I had to define my style, I’d say it is playful, slightly retro & elegant. I want my designs to feel elevated but still be friendly & inviting.

How has Amsterdam as a setting inspired your work?

Amsterdam has inspired me in so many ways – there are so many other talented creatives living in this city & you can see fun poster designs & well-branded businesses around so many parts of the city. I’m often trying new places & going to events just because I liked its brand identity!

Amsterdam has also inspired my love of color! Especially in the spring & summer, there are flowers all over the city which makes everything so lovely & colorful. I’m constantly taking photos for color palette inspirations.

Out of all the products you’ve designed, which one is your favorite and why?

I really love the first font I created, ZOOT. It’s so playful & works great as a display font AND also as a fun paragraph font. I know there’s a lot of bubble fonts out there but I feel like mine stands out with a touch of retro & psychedelic vibes.

I love creating illustrations and incorporating them in my designs so I’m also currently working on an illustration pack which I think might overtake ZOOT as my favorite product once it’s out!

What are the top 5 features/quality markers a customer should look for in a strong logo design?

  1. Consistency: A strong logo should fit well with the rest of the brand identity and be used consistently across all platforms.
  2. Industry Fit: It should subtly reflect a business’ industry, making it easy for people to understand its context without being overly obvious.
  3. Versatility: A strong logo should be usable in various sizes and situations, often achieved through a well-designed logo suite.
  4. Memorability: It should stand out in its niche and be memorable enough to leave a lasting impression.
  5. Simplicity: Avoid cluttering it with unnecessary flourishes. A simple, clean design is often more effective.
