The Stitching Set - AI Brushes

These high-quality, super detailed stitches are perfect for your projects, greeting cards, scrapbooks, illustrations, and more! Available as Illustrator (CS4+) brushes, this highly realistic digital stitching can be applied to almost any shape (small, highly detailed shapes are not recommended - try larger shapes, lines, frames, etc.)

This stitching is the perfect complement to any fabric texture, although it was designed with heavier textures, like leather, in mind. Try these, also from Ornaments of Grace:

The brushes come in 16 colors, and they can be further customized in Illustrator using the "Recolor Artwork" feature. The second screenshot displays the brushes' elements: four tiles that make up the brush, a single thread graphic (not part of the actual brush, but very useful where just one single stitch is needed in your designs) and a line with the brush applied, as a sample. Each brush can be customized in the brushes palette in Illustrator. Set the brush at 10% for smaller stitches and finer work, or 50-70% for larger stitches, or adjust the stroke weight in the stroke palette. Change colors, draw shapes, paint lines. Possibilities are endless!

File Formats included:

  • Source file (AI CS4 and AI CS2)
  • Stitching Brushes (AI CS4 and AI CS2)

What software do I need to use this product?

The Stitching Set requires Adobe Illustrator, version CS2 and up. There are files compatible with CS2+ and CS4+. Unfortunately, at this time, I do not have a version of the Stitching Set compatible with Photoshop.

How do I use the brushes?

Install the stitching brushes by following these simple steps:
- In Illustrator, open the file named “The Stitching Set-brushes”
- Draw a simple geometric shape, such as a circle, square, rectangle, etc, or draw a simple line, curved or straight.
- With your shape or line selected, visit the Brushes palette and click on the stitching brush of your preference.
- Your line or shape now has a stitched appearance.
- To make the stitches larger or smaller, adjust the stroke size.

Why is my computer running so slow with the brushes? How can I speed it up?

The Stitching Set is comprised of extremely highly detailed and complex Illustrator brushes that may cause your computer to run slowly. Because of this, it may be necessary to install one brush at a time in your file. Also, expanding the brush (Object > Expand) when you are done applying the brush to the shape may help. The brushes are rendered best on simple shapes. Complex shapes may or may not render correctly when the brushes are applied and are not recommended.

Any other tips for using the Stitching Brushes?

These tips will help streamline your stitching process: (You can also view the User Guide here: There is a section in this guide especially dedicated to using The Stitching Set.)

• Work with simple shapes. The Stitching brushes will not render properly on shapes or lines that are too complex, or it will cause your computer to run slowly.
• Applying filters or effects to a shape with the stitching brushes applied is not recommended.
• To install only specific brushes you prefer, open the file named “ The Stitching Set-brushes” and draw a shape. Apply your preferred brush to that shape, then copy that shape to a new document. Now, only that brush will appear in the brushes palette.
• Use the Source file to manually tweak the stitch elements, colors, and composition. Use the recolor artwork function in Adobe Illustrator for quick, easy color changes.
