What are the different types of fonts?

While there are many ways to differentiate fonts, the main different categories to start with are serif, sans serif, script, blackletter, display/decorative, and non-Western. What is the difference between a font and a typeface?

The difference between a font and a typeface is that a typeface refers to the overall design, while a font is a specific style, size, or weight within that typeface. This is a bit confusing on its face - we think it’s a bit easier to reference an example. So if “Neue Swiss” is your typeface, "Neue Swiss Bold 12pt" might be your font. Of course, as you’ll find with anything in this wonderful world of fonts, nothing is so simple. What Font License is Right for Me?

A desktop license is the most common license and covers most commercial font usage. You can create graphic designs (logos, signs, etc.) and products (mugs, t-shirts, hats, etc.) for yourself, or your client(s). These are great for logos and branding, movie titles and captions, PDFs, cards, signs and print merchandise. Products may be sold for profit as long as the letters are not the main selling point of your product (like a house number or stamp set). Embedding fonts is not allowed with this license with a few exceptions (such as a PDF reports). All licenses on our site are perpetual, which means you pay once and use it forever. To use a font on your website, you’ll need a web font license. This type of license allows you to embed font files into the CSS code on your site. From there, site visitors can then see and temporarily use your embedded fonts! Web licenses on Creative Market are priced by pageview limits (essentially this means they are priced according to traffic). Beyond the web, we’ve also got you covered for apps and publications. Our app licenses allow you to embed font files in app code. These are best for things like games, mobile apps, and web apps. About

The inspiration Balham to Brooklyn was lots of things, from previous attempts at creating a script typeface to old American neon signs. It’s me absorbing things—popular culture. America and watching too much Fast N’ Loud on discovery channel.

This is my take on that cutesy, nostalgic slice of America. It’s Krispy Kreme sweet and more than a touch retro.

Usage

It's a monoline script font so each letter is fully-connected to the next to emulate hand drawn letterforms. This is done by using contextual alternatives an OpenType feature available in you design application.

It’s ideally suited for packaging, logo work, branding, occasions, invites, posters and anything creative.

I called it Balham to Brooklyn. I got the name from a Turin Breaks song, it seemed like the perfect fit. The two places are so contrasting, Balham, London to Brooklyn USA. Also my favourite drinking hole is in Balham.

And just in case you were wondering, Brooklyn is about 3458 miles from Balham.

Font Format

The font format is otf and it only has one weight (regular). It includes all standard glyphs with contextual alternatives.

The typeface includes support for Western, Central and South Eastern languages. It has upper/lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols.

To get the real hand-drawn effect you must turn on contextual alternatives in your design application.

In total, it has 937 glyphs. I have even thrown in a selection of alternative uppercase letters.

Notes

The font preview window does not show contextual alternatives. Please check the screenshots for the proper version.

The font is not intended to be used in uppercase as it will look ugly. It's all about the sentence case.

For the best results in photoshop please set the anti-alias to smooth.

How can I unzip product files?

PC: To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location. To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.

Mac: Double click the .zip file, then search for the product folder or product file.

How do I install a font?

After you unzip your font product files, you will see .OTF or .TTF files. To install a font, just double click on the OTF or TTF file. For more information, check out our Font FAQ.

What software do I need to use this font?

When a font is installed on your computer, it can be used with any program that allows you to create text. Fonts will work in Microsoft Office applications, Adobe software, and almost any other program with a text editor.
