Ragtag - Messy Hand-Lettered Font

Ragtag is a messy hand-lettered display font built on one idea: perfect is boring. Every letter was drawn with a different tool fat marker, dry brush, thin pen, charcoal, outline, scribble-fill at its own size and its own weight, then left exactly as it came out. Some letters are huge, some are skinny, some are hollow, some are hatched. Put them in a row and they bounce, overlap and argue with each other, the way real hand-lettering on a scrap of paper does.

It's made for headlines, posters, zine covers, album art, packaging, merch, social graphics, stickers, quote prints anything that should look like it was lettered by hand in a hurry and on purpose.

Every letter has a twin. The whole alphabet exists twice. Leave Contextual Alternates on (it is on by default in most apps) and Ragtag flips every second letter to its alternate as you type, so words never repeat the same shape twice. Switch on Stylistic Set 01 to use the entire second alphabet, or turn calt off for the plain default set. No OpenType panel in your app? The alternates are also PUA-encoded, so you can pick them from the glyph panel in Canva, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio or Character Map.

Tips for using it

• Set it big. Ragtag looks best from 60 pt up; under 24 pt the texture turns to noise. Hand the small text to a plain sans.

• Tighten the leading the bounce fills the gaps.

• Mix CAPS and small letters mid-word. It's allowed.

• One ink, one accent colour, lots of empty paper. Ugly needs room.

• Pair it with a quiet sans (Poppins, Inter, Helvetica) and let Ragtag do the shouting.

• Works in Adobe apps, Affinity, Figma, Sketch, CorelDRAW, Canva, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Procreate and browsers. OpenType features (calt, ss01, salt) where supported; PUA codes (U+E000–U+E033) everywhere else.
