Garland Hand Drawn Ornamental Font

Garland is a hand-drawn ornamental display typeface inspired by the decorative world of American music, cinema and celebration — looping penmanship, old Hollywood titles, country records, Christmas choirs, hand-lettered cards and the theatrical worlds of Judy Garland and Dorothy.

Made entirely by hand, Garland is expressive, irregular and intentionally imperfect. Letters twist, curl and wander; strokes loop back into themselves; forms drape like ribbons; and some characters become almost illustrative — part letter, part flourish.

There’s something nostalgic about Garland, but it’s difficult to place exactly. A little Hollywood, a little Nashville. Old sheet music, theatre programmes, record sleeves, Christmas cards and wedding invitations. Dorothy somewhere over the rainbow.

Rather than recreating one particular historical lettering style, Garland takes its cues from American ornamental and vernacular lettering, allowing things to get a little stranger. Narrow characters sit alongside wide looping forms, line weights change, and unexpected details appear throughout.

Each letter also includes a hand-drawn alternate, giving you more freedom when building words and titles. Mix the characters to change the rhythm and personality of your lettering, or embrace the overlapping loops and flourishes. Garland isn't intended to behave like a polished digital script — its uneven weights, irregular forms and imperfections are an intentional part of its hand-drawn character.

The irregular line weights, textured edges, overlaps and hand-drawn imperfections are intentional features of the typeface and will remain when the font is used. Garland is designed to retain the character of lettering drawn by hand rather than the uniformity of a traditional digital script.
