ShowBill Shadow Outline Display Font
About
Show Bill Shadow Outline is a hand-crafted, all-caps display typeface inspired by old wood type, Western showbills, circus posters, theatre bills, painted signs and the bold dimensional lettering once used to announce shows, performances and spectacles.
Every character has been made from scratch by hand.
Built from chunky, imperfect forms, the letters combine a fine outlined face with a bold offset shadow, creating the look of dimensional wood type, hand-painted sign lettering and old printed display type. Heavy slabs sit alongside bulbous curves, strange little notches, exaggerated serifs and uneven proportions.
The shadow is built directly into each character rather than applied as a digital effect, giving the alphabet its own irregular, hand-made rhythm.
Like the original Showbill, perfection isn’t the point. Edges wobble, proportions change, curves are slightly wonky and individual characters don’t always agree on the rules. Showbill Shadow Outline is designed to feel like letters pulled one by one from an old wood-type suitcase, inked up and assembled into a poster.
This version is ALL CAPS, with an additional 2 alternates for every letter so you can swap characters throughout words and avoid typography that feels too uniform or digital.
Some letters are wide. Some are narrow. Some have exaggerated feet, pinched waists, unusual curves or awkward little corners. Mix the characters together and let them clash a little.
Showbill Shadow Outline takes cues from Western show posters, country music graphics, saloons, travelling entertainment, circus printing, hand-painted signs and theatrical ephemera without recreating any single historical typeface.
It’s bold enough for a country poster, strange enough for an album cover and imperfect enough to still feel like it came from somebody’s hands.
A hand-drawn shadow font for making a big old show.
