What are the different types of fonts?

While there are many ways to differentiate fonts, the main different categories to start with are serif, sans serif, script, blackletter, display/decorative, and non-Western. What is the difference between a font and a typeface?

The difference between a font and a typeface is that a typeface refers to the overall design, while a font is a specific style, size, or weight within that typeface. This is a bit confusing on its face - we think it’s a bit easier to reference an example. So if “Neue Swiss” is your typeface, "Neue Swiss Bold 12pt" might be your font. Of course, as you’ll find with anything in this wonderful world of fonts, nothing is so simple. What Font License is Right for Me?

A desktop license is the most common license and covers most commercial font usage. You can create graphic designs (logos, signs, etc.) and products (mugs, t-shirts, hats, etc.) for yourself, or your client(s). These are great for logos and branding, movie titles and captions, PDFs, cards, signs and print merchandise. Products may be sold for profit as long as the letters are not the main selling point of your product (like a house number or stamp set). Embedding fonts is not allowed with this license with a few exceptions (such as a PDF reports). All licenses on our site are perpetual, which means you pay once and use it forever. To use a font on your website, you’ll need a web font license. This type of license allows you to embed font files into the CSS code on your site. From there, site visitors can then see and temporarily use your embedded fonts! Web licenses on Creative Market are priced by pageview limits (essentially this means they are priced according to traffic). Beyond the web, we’ve also got you covered for apps and publications. Our app licenses allow you to embed font files in app code. These are best for things like games, mobile apps, and web apps. Beautiful font with lovely alternate characters. What the designer does not tell us is that that the alternates are only accessible through design software (glyph panel) and aren’t easily usable on websites like Squarespace. I found this out AFTER my purchase. For web use, you’ll mainly get the standard character set.

Hi Sarah, thank you for your feedback and for purchasing my font. You’re absolutely right, alternate characters are accessed through OpenType features (such as stylistic alternates, swashes, etc.), and these are easiest to use inside professional design software via the Glyph panel or OpenType menu (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Affinity, etc.). Many website builders like Squarespace have limited support for these advanced features, so web use may only display the standard character set unless custom coding is applied. If you’d like, feel free to message me anytime, I’d be happy to help you access the alternates or suggest the best workaround for web use.

I downloaded the fonts and they were not as advised. I attempted the Character Viewer like the creator recommended in another review but it did not work. I'd love these fonts sent directly to me or a full refund.

Hi Logan, The alternate letters shown in the preview are included in the font as alternates letter. These can be accessed through the glyphs/character panel in software that supports OpenType features. If you need any help using them, feel free to reach out, I’ll be happy to guide you.

How can I unzip product files?

PC: To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location. To extract the entire contents of the compressed folder, right-click the folder, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.

Mac: Double click the .zip file, then search for the product folder or product file.

How do I install a font?

After you unzip your font product files, you will see .OTF or .TTF files. To install a font, just double click on the OTF or TTF file. For more information, check out our Font FAQ.

What software do I need to use this font?

When a font is installed on your computer, it can be used with any program that allows you to create text. Fonts will work in Microsoft Office applications, Adobe software, and almost any other program with a text editor.
