About
Batik is a type of fabric-making that employs the use of wax and dyes. It usually follows a pattern of wax-stamping designs unto a plain fabric, dyeing and re stamping with another design or the same one this time locking in a different color. This form of cloth-making is very popular in Africa, Indonesia and other parts of the world.
This particular pattern is of cowries - the shell of some sea snails. This motif is very popular among Africans and was once used as a form of currency for trading.
