Bad or Rad: 99Designs' New Crowdsourced Logo

Kevin Whipps March 31, 2021 · 2 min read

Ever heard of 99Designs? Let’s say that you, a company, needs a logo. You go to 99Designs and they put together a competition of sorts to see what designers want to pitch in on your concept. You then get back a bunch of designs, and the winning one gets your money. Now 99Designs — a company that crowdsources logos — has crowdsourced its own logo.
For the record, here’s the old logo:

And the new one:

99Designs has opened up about the entire process on their site. Patrick Llewellyn, CEO of 99Designs, says, “We wanted an identity that didn’t take center stage, we’ve reserved the spotlight for our community. But we still wanted something strong, simple and quietly confident.”
OK, great. But Creative Bloq has a different take on things. From their article: “Despite admiring how the company has stuck to its principles, designer Andy Hau isn’t overwhelmed by the results. “It looks…fine. Not amazing, not awful, it’s bland and easily consumable, kind of like tofu but with none the health benefits, he says.”
