1. Create a list of your goals and objectives for your presentation

Remember the words that the cat said to Alice when she was lost, “If you do not know where you are going, all roads lead you there.” You should know exactly what you expect from your presentation, what you are trying to communicate, what is the main objective, and what is expected from the audience after they’ve heard your presentation. To achieve this, take a sheet of paper, a pencil, and write a short list of your presentation’s objectives.

2. “Good Things, When Short, Are Twice As Good”

I know you have so much to say and an abundant amount of words to express, but remember that your time is short and so is your audience’s attention span. That’s why if you want to keep your audience focused, you must prepare a summary of your content by choosing only the most important and relevant information.

3.- Define the theme design

When you have a clear content, objective, and audience, it is much easier to define the subject or “line of design” that you will follow. This step is key because here is when presentation design truly starts coming together.

4. Start from scratch

Powerpoint white

Don’t go for PowerPoint or Keynote’s default designs. Always begin with a “Blank Presentation” – that will give you more freedom to customize your own deck of slides.

5. Choose a color scheme

Palette

Color plays a major role when creating presentations. Choose a color palette that is in accordance with your company’s branding. Alternatively, you can create your own combinations. We recommend a fantastic app created by Adobe that is easy to use, where you can create your own palettes: https://color.adobe.com

6. Do not forget contrast

When choosing your color palette please consider contrast. This element makes your presentation look more engaging and easier to appreciate. If you are using a dark background then your text and elements should be in light colors. If your background color is light, the text and elements should be dark.

7. Choose a font family

Choose legible and clear fonts. Avoid those that are extravagant and out of the concept of the main theme. Remember: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. Try not to use the fonts that come pre-installed in your operating system. Do a little effort to find and install new ones. Use the same theme throughout your presentation. If you want to emphasize something, then use an extra font. As a rule of thumb, we recommend avoiding more than two different font styles.

8. Hierarchy of Text

The hierarchy of your text is as important as your font choice. Try playing with larger and smaller texts according to the importance of content. Please do not add too much text on your slides. Do not make the mistake of overloading your slide content and making the text so small that it’s impossible for your audience to read. Use single slides to feature titles that break up your content into manageable sections.

9. Photography

They say a picture speaks a thousand words, and that’s why you must include photographs in your presentation. Try using high-quality photographs and make sure that they are well related to what you’re saying. Creative Market offers a great catalog of stock photos that you can buy and use in your next presentation.

10. Infographics

A striking way to present your reports is through infographics. They don’t have to be complicated. Instead, infographics are a simple tool to convert your data into something visual and easy to understand and remember.

11. Find Inspiration and Have Fun

If for some reason you feel blocked and with little creativity, search on social networks for design ideas. Above all, always remember to have fun with what you’re creating for your audience, because in doing so you’ll truly be creating a next-level presentation.
