Barbed – Handmade Gothic Horror Font
About
Barbed is a hand-crafted experimental display typeface inspired by vintage horror cinema, gothic lettering, underground music graphics, occult print ephemera and strange decorative typography.
Sharp, twisting and deliberately irregular, Barbed is built from curving strokes, pointed terminals, unusual internal shapes and thorn-like details. Some letters appear carved or cut, while others seem to curl, twist and grow into themselves.
The result sits somewhere between an old horror film title, an experimental gothic alphabet and a piece of forgotten underground print — dark, decorative, slightly psychedelic and full of character.
Rather than following the conventions of traditional blackletter or smoothing everything into a perfectly consistent digital alphabet, Barbed embraces the awkwardness and irregularity of its hand-drawn beginnings.
Letterforms bend, proportions shift, curves become sharp points and familiar characters take on unexpected shapes.
Barbed is not intended to be a conventional, highly legible typeface. It is an expressive display font designed to create unusual, atmospheric typography with a strong visual identity.
A STRANGE LITTLE ALPHABET
Barbed includes a complete A–Z alphabet, designed for creating short words, titles, headlines and experimental lettering compositions.
Its unusual construction makes individual letters feel almost like small illustrations, particularly when enlarged.
The alphabet is intentionally limited to letters only, keeping the focus on the shapes, movement and decorative character of the typeface.
Think old horror posters, strange record sleeves, underground publications, gothic ornament and lettering from another world.
Barbed is a font made to be played with — imperfect, expressive, dark and just a little unsettling.
