Our CEO Bubs had this to say about Stephen joining the team, “I first worked with Stephen nearly 8 years ago when I used a simple color picker tool he built on the first version of COLOURlovers. Then over the next several years I worked with him twice to redesign COLOURlovers and have tried many times over those years to try to hire him… good things come to those who wait. We’re stoked to have a very talented developer & designer join the team and he’s single-handedly doubled the number of kids we have in the extended company family!”

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do for Creative Market.
A random known fact about me is that I used to create 3D graphics. I wanted to work for Pixar and make awesome movies. Obviously, I’m not at Pixar and I wasn’t the greatest at creating 3D graphics. I am now a programmer at Creative Market, which is way better than Pixar anyway. I live in the great city of Albany, NY [sarcasm intended] with my wife and 4 children. Aside from programming, I love to read, take photos and hang out with my family.
What were you doing before you joined the team and how did you and Creative Market “find each other”?
Prior to Creative Market, I worked for Virb. It was an amazing opportunity and I had the privilege of working with the Virb team for 8 years since its inception.
Creative Market has always had a special place in my heart. I have worked with Darius, Aaron and Chris Williams over the past 8 years on various COLOURlovers related projects and have always enjoyed working with them. They are extremely talented people and they have built up a great team. When I had decided to move on from Virb, Creative Market was the only company that I could get excited about and the rest is history.
What’s your workstation like? Do you have any tools/software/gadgets you can’t live without?
My standard setup is kinda typical, so let me tell you about the first computer I ever touched. When I was a child, my father brought home a Tandy TRS-80 Model III for the family. I honestly don’t remember what HE used it for, but I used it for playing a maze type game that boasted of a whopping 2 colors. It took 5 1/8 floppy disks and you could expand the storage by hooking up a cassette tape player. Yup, I used a cassette player as an external hard drive.
Do you have any go-to music when you’re working?
The bands that I keep coming back to over and over again are Tycho, Bon Iver, Volcano Choir, MuteMath and Future of Forestry.
What’s your favorite programming language?
Javascript has been my go-to language over the years and its evolution and what people are using it for is incredible. While we’re talking about programming languages, I’d like to say that Actionscript is my most loathed programming language ever. Actionscript 1.0 was the first language I ever touched (outside of HTML and CSS). Even though Actionscript in subsequent versions, I’m still emotionally scarred.
What are some of the projects you’re currently working on?
Today, I added my face to the About page. Tomorrow, I’ll conquer the internet.
Do you have a favorite shop in the marketplace?
I’m a sucker for vintage fonts, especially the ornamental, art-deco type fonts. I think Decade Type Foundry has an amazingly solid store with gorgeously ornate fonts.
Any parting words of wisdom for our readers?
Never leave home without an arsenal of animated GIFs.
