4 Fundamentals of Tweeting

Maryam Taheri Last updated: March 27, 2024 · 4 min read

The days of getting news and information from printed newspapers and magazines are long gone. In today’s digital age, people are turning to the internet to find out about what’s happening around the world — be it with people in their lives, in the world at large, or with the latest in popular products and trends. Thus, it makes sense that one of the most popular sources of information on the Internet today is Twitter — that up-to-the-minute platform where people can share news, thoughts or ideas in quick 140-word messages (“tweets.â€) Twitter can be one of the most effective ways to disseminate information or attract attention to your website or company — but it’s not foolproof. There are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to running a successful Twitter, and following them correctly can mean the difference between remaining undiscovered or going viral. Check out the list below to learn more about 4 fundamental, must-dos if you want to have an effective Twitter presence; follow these and you could grow your business easily and effectively.

1. Tweet consistently.

One of the most fundamental rules for running a successful Twitter is that you have to Tweet. It sounds simple, but forgetting to Tweet can mean losing followers or any momentum you may have built towards gaining a following on Twitter. You’ll want to stay on the forefront of your followers’ minds in order to build your reputation on the site, and you’ll have to send out Tweets in order to bring in new potential customers. There’s a careful line to walk, though, between being consistent on Twitter and Tweeting too much. A good tool to use to help you find the right balance is a Tweet scheduling platform like Tweetdeck or HootSuite, which allow you to pre-schedule Tweets, so you don’t have to be around your computer all day.

2. Change it up.

Of course it helps to advertise whatever you are doing or selling via your Twitter, but it’s important that you also share interesting and relevant information with followers so you don’t inundate or bore them. Try to only market your company directly about half of the time, and use the other half of your Tweets to share things you find interesting or inspiring in your field. You can build your own reputation as a thought leader and credible resource for news and information, and you can make sure people don’t tune out your Tweets when they are appear in their feed.

3. Interact.

Twitter might seem like one of the least interactive social media platforms, particularly compared to something like Facebook. But, in reality, Twitter allows a lot of opportunity for interaction between users — and it’s important that you use those opportunities. People don’t want to feel like they’re doing business with or following a computer or robot — they want to connect with other people. So, by re-tweeting or favoriting other peoples’ tweets, you can engage them in a dialogue, and also show some more of your personality and human side.

4. Use hashtags.

This one is pretty straightforward to, but if you want to be discovered or found by potential customers or people who didn’t previously know about your business, you should use keyword hashtags on your tweets. Use searchable hashtags (not ones that are insanely obscure and relevant only to your company.) This way, when people searches for a service or product you offer, your Tweets will come up in their search. Also, you can check Twitter to see what categories are trending (or what people are most often looking for on Twitter.) Include a hashtag with a popular Twitter keyword and there’s a good chance lots of people will stumble upon (and maybe follow!) your Twitter, too.
