Bad or Rad: Instagram's New Logo

Let’s take a moment to let this all sink in but … Instagram has changed their logo. Here’s the video announcing the change:

They also changed the logos for all of their products to match (Layout, Boomerang and Hyperlapse), and here they are:

This is all very fresh news, as Instagram just announced the change earlier today on their blog. So we don’t know who designed the logo, how it came to be, why it was changed or any of that good info. All we know is that this new logo — which also applies to the app icon you’ll see on your mobile phone — steers away from the skeumorphic approach that we had before, and keeps things super simple. Also, the colors that were previously in the upper left-hand corner of the app icon are now integrated into the rainbow seen in the background of the new one.

  • The more I look at the icon mark itself, the more I like it. I think it has finally caught up to a timeless design like Facebook or Twitter. I don't mind the gradient, I get it. I've seen worse gradients. Overall, its a nice update. 6 years ago

  • I don't hate it. But to make it more timeless I think a flat colour would have been better as the background. I can see them dropping the gradient over time. When Instagram first hit the market it was aimed at hipsters and it was modeled after an old Polaroid camera. It's kind of lost that vibe now and moved more to how Apple created their music app icon. I don't hate it. It's a risky move but I do love the minimal black and white inside the app now. 6 years ago
  • Looks very much like a design element from the latest iOS interface, so I'd say it looks like a "fad", instead of "bad" or "rad". When iOS changes, or when Instagram's designers feel like they will come up with original ideas, the logo will change too. One more thing: With or without the shiny colors, the logo now resembles a washing machine rather than a camera. 6 years ago
  • As a artist who focuses heavily on color, I am not a fan. Gradients are really tricky. I agree with those of you who said its looks fad-like, it reminds me of some of the previous apple ios design. Basically I'm saying that to me it already feels out of date. I do like the way that they changed the logo for their various apps, I think that was implemented well, but the color of the gradient is not what it should be. I think they overestimate how much people associate the four color bars with their brand. 6 years ago
  • I love the presentation they made for launching the new icon. I like the app, but I don't really like the final result. I agree with [@Barış Ãœnver](user:95594) When I sow it, the first thing that popped in my mind was a washing machine icon. But like with the other logos that changed recently we'll get used to this one too :) 6 years ago

  • Overall I like it. The gradient is a little over the top. Their old logo did not represent well at a very small scale. This is good improvement. 6 years ago

  • Meh. It looks like it is jumping on the iOS bandwagon, but not, a bit late in the game - particularly when there are rumblings about a potential shift in UI trends. The skeuomorph wasn't a game-changer either, though, so what do you expect, I suppose. I think they are throwing out a lot of equity that could have been leveraged in the redesign, but I also don't think that will be a big issue for them. They are getting a lot of people chattering about it. They could have been a bit more thoughtful about it, but it won't do them any harm. 6 years ago

  • Personally, I like the design of the app update itself (with the black and white monochrome theme instead of the blue) because the purpose of the app is to highlight the photos users post and with the plain theme, it is less distracting from the photo than before with the blue. (did that make sense?) However, the new logo does not match the new monochromatic layout of the app, and I would prefer it if it was a black outline on a white background or vice-versa. All in all though, I do prefer it from the old logo. 6 years ago

  • Despite what everyone on the internet seems to think, I actually find their rebrand quite refreshing. Sure it could have been done better, just as everything can always be done better. Right? But I appreciate a lot of what they went after and did to update from their past to current identity. I like the playfulness with the color scheme and the simplicity in the app UI to showcase the community's content. It's simple, and that's okay. Rebranding, whether from a product UX/UI perspective or the logo, is something that's happening consistently, especially in the digital space. This was definitely a big change and that's what I think people are impulsively reacting, especially negatively, to. Rather than considering the space/market in which the Instagram product exists where there's an inevitability of change on a daily, if not monthly basis. I always chuckle when I hear people complain about product changes and rebrands without a clear understanding and thinking about the why/how/when/what/where of the products evolvement. Anyway, rant over. Cheers to the new Instagram brand! It's fresh. 6 years ago
  • Yikes! I like reading the mixed feelings. At first, I cringed, not gonna lie. I *like* that old hipster design. I wish they would have kept it more similar with the colors, but, I think with it's rise in use and popularity, it needed this change. Not sure if the too-bright colors work for me yet, but the logo itself I dig. Simple, elegant, and recognizable. 6 years ago
  • It looks like they just bought the thing off a place like this. It does resemble one of the many social media icons for Instagram you find in a pack of rounded social media icons. The gradient really doesn't do it justice and looks like something from ten years back when everyone and their brother was into making journal icons over on Livejournal. While the UI is refreshing the icon for the app is not. All we have been asking since iOS 7 is that they go flat with the icon they already had. I'm sorry Instagram but this is a design fail. 6 years ago

  • Back in the early 90's when Photoshop and Illustrator were new, we saw gradients being used everywhere....so much that gradients became overused and outdated. It reminds me of that period of time, so it looks dated to me. But it may look fresh and new to the millennials. 6 years ago
  • I'm not a big fan of gradients, but I guess that is what is trending now... It doesn't bother me as much as the actual app does. It need some color. 6 years ago
  • Ridiculous. Designers love to front and pretend that designing a logo is just as complex as designing a cathedral. It's a damn square with rounded corners and a circle in the middle. Get over it. This new logo is bad, trendy and will not last long. They probably spent 100K doing all this garbage... 6 years ago
