Entrepreneurship 101: Creative Risk for Fiscal Reward!

Creative Market Last updated: March 28, 2024 · 3 min read

If you want to become an entrepreneur, already consider yourself an entrepreneur or you’ve always wanted to quit your job and do what “your boss does,” but better, that’s great! More power to you. You might have the next million dollar idea just waiting to take flight! However, before you open that expense account and hire a secretary, the first thing you have to realize — and recognize in yourself — is the several essential qualities that you’ll need to become a successful entrepreneur.

Make Sure It’s the Right Choice for You

Anyone who embarks on the challenging journey of starting their own business — and sees it through to creative and monetary success — has to be an independent thinker, a risk taker, a maverick, a workaholic, a leader and an individual undeterred by setback or failure. They must have a killer instinct, refuse to take no for an answer, be a master salesperson and be endowed with an endless, almost naïve streak of optimism. If this sounds like you, keep reading; if not, champion the unique and valuable talents you do have and hit your boss up for a raise the next chance you get!

The Power of Persuasion

The ability to sell your proposition to backers and investors is essential to getting your business off the ground and your product or service into the marketplace. With a well-documented business plan and a persuasive pitch deck, this can be done successfully.

Leadership is the Key

Being a good leader is paramount to being a successful entrepreneur. Not only in the sense of having a “vision†and spearheading it into manifestation, but also in the ability of putting together a stellar team of collaborators (a.k.a. partners, associates and employees) and getting the best out of them. Having top people around you who are inspired to excel is much like a football coach driving his star athletes to a championship.

Your “Great Idea†is Just the Beginning

The exciting innovation or ingenious invention that will develop into your product or service is just the first step in achieving success. It’s the branding and marketing of your idea that will determine how fast your startup will go from concept to potential commercial heavyweight. An attractive business image and persuasive, ingratiating company persona through logo design, corporate identity, advertising, website, content marketing and social media is vital to the success of your enterprise.

  • Well written. I wouldn't describe it better. :) 12 years ago
  • Definitely agree that an idea is just the start. If you have an idea for a business just get it started. It doesn't have to be perfect. When you actually execute your idea (even if it's not perfect) you have a head start on 95% of your competition. 12 years ago
  • Love this article. Like @Dustin Lee said, get started, it forces you to keep working and progressing rather than sitting still and planning or strategizing for something that "might happen". 12 years ago
  • Totally agree with @Dustin Lee and @FilterGrade - having a great idea is fantastic, but being willing to take the plunge and turn it into a reality is what separates the dreamers from those living the dream. =) 12 years ago
  • @Dustin Lee - Agreed and, once you get started, don't start comparing. Comparing = Doubting your own creative process. Then you end up 'looking' and sounding like everybody else instead of yourself. 12 years ago
