Although I’m not a designer, I have been writing about design related subjects for a while (around 4 years), and one thing about the design community that still amazes me is how committed and supportive people are. Designers are always delivering amazing projects to the community. And here I’m talking about high quality stuff, items designed by talented and passionate people who make their work available to us. People that make our life easier by creating beautiful things that we can count on when designing our projects.
How wonderful it is to know you can find beautifully designed elements for your projects out there? From icons to fonts to templates, you can find a lot of great things to get your projects done without having to start everything from scratch. The amazing part of this is that you can focus on the specific thing you like the most, while counting with the work of other talented people to cover areas you don’t feel that comfortable with. Staring at a blank canvas thinking about what you should tackle first is not something you need to worry about anymore. You just need to know where to go to find great stuff.

All of us have a strength, something that we do best. We just have to recognize this and look for support in those areas that could use an extra hand. Here is where you go to the community for help. Need a killer font? An icon? A texture? A stock photo? An illustration? A plug-in to help you with that animation on your site? Your fellow designers got your back! And even though you are not starting from scratch, it doesn’t mean your projects will look the same, you just need to combine elements and add your own style to it. Add your touch and your project will be unique, no matter which elements you choose to use.
Starting things from scratch is not only time consuming but it also pretty demanding, so give your fellow designers a shot and start looking for things that are ready to go, just waiting for you to find them. You will not only gain time but your projects may end up looking better. The magic of it is that you don’t need to do everything yourself, you just need to gather high quality stuff and put the pieces together, always adding your personality.
Personally, I already used some vectors and fonts to help a friend creating a baby shower invitation. Besides also using some handwriting fonts and icons to create thank you cards and other things I like to experiment with. It doesn’t matter if you are doing a personal project or something for a client, you can always turn to the design community to find resources that will suit your needs. And remember to always understand the license and copyrights from things you download. Make sure the item is available for your use.
